Completed Pool Fence Electrical Bonding Repair in Knightdale, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team provided a Specialty service under our Pool & Hot Tub Electrical category for YMCA of the Triangle in Knightdale, NC. On April 11, 2024, our technician Cody Perry completed a comprehensive repair to restore proper equipotential bonding at the pool slide area’s aluminum fence.
When metal components around pools aren’t bonded together, small voltage differences can occur, posing a safety risk. Our goal with this project was to ensure the pool’s perimeter metalwork remains at the same electrical potential, helping reduce shock hazards and aligning with best practices for pool safety.
Project Snapshot
- Service Area: Knightdale, NC
- Customer: YMCA of the Triangle
- Completed By: Cody Perry, Raleigh Branch
- Service Type: Pool fence equipotential bonding repair
- Date: April 11, 2024
Issue We Resolved
The aluminum black fence surrounding the pool slide had no existing equipotential bond, while the adjacent slide piers were bonded. This mismatch can create potential differences between touchable metal parts. To correct this, the fence needed to be bonded to the slide piers at three distinct locations.
Our Bonding Repair Process
- Surface preparation: Stripped paint at each connection point on the aluminum fence to expose clean, conductive metal for a durable bond.
- Clamping the fence: Installed a listed cold water ground clamp where the fence meets the concrete at each of the three bonding points.
- Pier connection: Drilled and tapped the adjacent slide piers with a 1032 bit to create secure mounting points.
- Galvanized bond lugs: Added corrosion-resistant galvanized bond lugs at the pier locations to complete the mechanical and electrical connection in three locations.
These steps established a continuous, low-impedance bonding path between the slide fence and the already bonded piers, helping maintain an even electrical potential around the water and deck area.
Why Equipotential Bonding Matters for Pools
Proper bonding ties together metal components such as fences, handrails, and structural steel so they share the same electrical potential. In a pool environment, this is a critical safety measure that helps reduce the risk of stray voltage. By restoring the bond at the fence in three key locations, we reinforced a safer environment around the slide and deck area.
