Pool Electrical, Control Panel and Lighting — Fort Mill, SC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team (Matthews branch) completed a turnkey pool electrical project in Fort Mill, SC for Ivy Creek Pools, led by our technician Chris Rogers. Completed on July 17, 2025, this specialty scope included a new 60-amp feeder, customer-supplied Jandy control panel installation, equipment hookups for the pump and heater, six pool lights, a code-required GFCI receptacle, and a full NEC-compliant bonding and grounding system.
Project Overview
- 60A power upgrade: Installed a new 60-amp breaker at the main panel and pulled a dedicated feeder using THHN #6 conductors through approximately 60 feet of 1-inch PVC conduit to the pool equipment area.
- Control panel setup: Set a double 4x4 wood post in concrete and mounted the customer-supplied Jandy control panel. This included the required breaker at the main panel and a code-required service receptacle.
- GFCI outlet with in-use protection: Installed a weather-resistant GFCI receptacle and a bubble cover to provide safe, code-compliant power at the equipment pad.
- Equipment hookups: Connected the pool pump and heater with properly sized whips and integrated low-voltage control per manufacturer specifications.
- Six pool lights: Installed six customer-supplied fixtures. Touchstone Electric provided the THHN ground conductors, routed through conduit with each whip to meet code.
- Bonding and grounding: Established a bonding halo using #8 bare copper per NEC 680.26, connected to the grounding system and bonded to pool equipment for equal-potential safety. Grounded all equipment to ensure reliable fault clearing.
- Permitting and inspection readiness: Secured the required electrical permit for a smooth inspection process.
- Additional request: Supplied a 100A GE breaker for a dock subpanel as part of the project’s custom needs.
Code-First Pool Electrical
Pool environments demand precise, to-code installations. Our team focused on critical life-safety elements, including:
- NEC 680.26 bonding halo to reduce shock risk around the water.
- GFCI protection and an in-use bubble cover for safe outdoor receptacle use.
- Dedicated feeder sizing with #6 THHN conductors to support 60A loads for the control panel and downstream equipment.
- Clean, protected raceways using 1-inch PVC conduit with appropriate fittings and terminations.
- Manufacturer-aligned hookups for the Jandy panel, pump, heater, and lighting transformers.
The result is a reliable, serviceable installation that’s built for long-term performance and straightforward maintenance.
Recommendations and Future-Proofing
To support future expansion and streamline serviceability, our team recommended replacing the existing interior panel and routing a cleaner, more direct feed for exterior equipment. This proactive step can improve capacity, accessibility, and overall system organization.
