Project overview in Waxhaw, NC

Touchstone Electric completed a permitted pool electrical bonding and outdoor outlet installation for homeowner Patti Polacek in Waxhaw, NC. This Specialty service, part of our Pool & Hot Tub Electrical expertise, was performed by technician Ben Lively from our Charlotte (Matthews) branch and wrapped up on July 3, 2024.

From permitting to protective devices and trenching, our team delivered a safe, code-conscious solution that prepares the pool area for reliable operation and upcoming inspections.

Scope of work completed

  • Electrical permit: Filed with the county and scheduled the required inspections.
  • Pool bonding halo: Established a continuous bonding grid around the pool, tied into the bonding/ground lug on pool equipment, and bonded all metallic components to equalize voltage potential.
  • Equipment grounding: Grounded all pool-related equipment to help ensure fault currents are cleared quickly by the overcurrent device.
  • GFCI protection: Installed a new 20-amp GFCI breaker to enhance protection for exterior and wet-location circuits.
  • Outdoor receptacles: Added a weather-resistant standard receptacle with an in-use bubble cover for continuous protection whether a plug is inserted or not.
  • Wood post set in concrete: Set a sturdy post to support the outdoor outlet enclosure and maintain working clearance.
  • PVC conduit: Installed approximately 1" PVC conduit with appropriate fittings and transitions to protect wiring and provide a clean, serviceable pathway.
  • Trenching: Completed roughly 55 feet of trenching at an 18–24 inch depth for underground routing per project scope.
  • Branch wiring: Pulled new NM-B wiring as specified for general-purpose loads and terminations.

Why pool bonding and grounding matter

Pool areas mix water, people, and electricity—so proper bonding and grounding are essential. A bonding halo ties together conductive parts to minimize differences in voltage, while equipment grounding directs fault current safely back to the source so protective devices operate as intended. Together with GFCI protection and weatherproof outlets, these measures reduce shock risk and help keep people safe around the pool.

Materials and protections chosen for durability

We used corrosion-resistant materials and methods appropriate for outdoor and wet locations, including in-use (bubble) covers, PVC conduit, and secure terminations. The GFCI breaker adds an extra layer of protection for receptacles and equipment that may be exposed to moisture, and the properly set wood post maintains compliant mounting height and accessibility for maintenance.

All work was completed with permitting and inspection coordination to align with local code requirements in Waxhaw and the greater Charlotte area.
