Pool Electrical Bonding & GFCI Installation in Charlotte, NC
On August 16, 2024, Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team completed a Specialty service in the Pool & Hot Tub Electrical category for homeowner Mike Direnzo in Charlotte, NC. Lead technician Ben Lively, from our Matthews-based branch, delivered a safety-first upgrade that brings the pool environment in line with modern electrical best practices.
Project overview
This project focused on creating a safe, code-conscious electrical setup around the pool area. We established a complete pool bonding halo, grounded all associated equipment, added dedicated 20-amp GFCI protection at the panel, and installed weatherproof outdoor outlets served by conductors in PVC conduit. Per the agreed scope, the homeowner provided the trenching required for the bonding and conduit runs.
What we installed
- Complete pool bonding halo: We formed an equipotential bonding ring and tied it to the pool equipment’s grounding lug, bonding metal components to reduce voltage differences around the water’s edge and deck area.
- Grounded all pool equipment: All metallic parts and equipment were connected to the grounding system to help ensure safe operation and reduce shock risk.
- Two 20-amp GFCI breakers: We added GFCI protection at the service panel for the required pool and outdoor circuits. GFCI protection helps detect ground faults rapidly and shut power off to protect people around wet locations.
- #12 THHN conductors in 1-inch PVC: Approximately 70 feet of THHN conductors (3–4 conductors as required) were pulled through 1-inch PVC conduit, complete with fittings, connectors, and LBs to create a durable, code-conscious pathway.
- Outdoor receptacles with in-use covers: Two standard receptacles were installed and protected by bubble (in-use) covers for weatherproof performance. A wood post set in concrete provides a stable, long-lasting mounting point for accessible power near the pool area.
Upon completion, we verified proper bonding continuity, confirmed GFCI operation, and labeled circuits for clarity and future serviceability.
