Service area: Monroe, NC | Branch: Charlotte (Matthews) | Technician: Ben Lively | Date completed: June 4, 2024
Touchstone Electric delivered a specialty Pool & Hot Tub Electrical service for homeowner Tom Marchese, ensuring safe, code-compliant power around the pool area. Our Charlotte team based in Matthews completed a full bonding and grounding path, installed a dedicated GFCI breaker, added a protected outdoor outlet, and organized new wiring and conduit for durable performance in an outdoor environment.
Project Overview
For pools, proper bonding, grounding, and GFCI protection dramatically reduce shock risk and help equipment operate reliably. This Monroe project focused on creating a continuous bonding halo around the pool, tying all metallic components together, and protecting circuits with a 20A GFCI breaker designed for wet and outdoor locations.
Scope of Work Completed
- Pool bonding and grounding: Established a bonding halo around the pool, trenched approximately 4"–6" deep and 18"–24" from the pool wall, and tied the bonding conductor into the ground lug at the pool equipment. All pool-related equipment was bonded for an equalized electrical potential.
- 20A GFCI breaker: Installed a 20-amp GFCI breaker to provide ground-fault protection suitable for outdoor and damp locations surrounding the pool area.
- THHN #12 wiring: Pulled approximately 40 feet of THHN #12 conductor (3–4 strand as needed) to support the 20-amp circuit and associated devices.
- Outdoor receptacle with bubble cover: Installed a standard receptacle with an in-use, weatherproof bubble cover for year-round, code-compliant protection from rain and splash zones.
- Conduit runs: Installed approximately 10 feet of 1" PVC conduit and 5 feet of 1" liquid-tight flexible conduit, including fittings and supports as applicable, to safeguard wiring and provide clean, serviceable pathways.
- Standard switch: Installed a standard switch per scope to provide convenient control for the designated device.
All work was completed with attention to neatness, durability, and safety to meet local requirements in Monroe, NC.
Why Bonding, Grounding, and GFCI Matter
- Bonding halo: Equalizes voltage on metal parts around the pool to reduce the risk of electric shock.
- Grounding: Provides a low-impedance path for fault current, helping protective devices operate correctly.
- GFCI protection: Rapidly interrupts power when it senses a ground fault, offering critical protection in wet locations.
- Weatherproof outlet: An in-use bubble cover shields the receptacle from moisture, keeping connections safer in outdoor conditions.
- Conduit and organized wiring: Protects conductors from physical damage and UV exposure while keeping installations tidy and serviceable.
