Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte crew completed a specialty pool electrical project for Matt Hultquist, centered on safety, reliability, and code compliance. The scope included installing a new 30A GFCI breaker for pool equipment, performing a comprehensive safety diagnostic, rejuvenating three outdoor electrical panels, upgrading the grounding system with a new ground rod and continuous grounding electrode conductor, and relocating the pool panel for clear emergency access.

Project Overview

Pool and spa systems demand dedicated protection and dependable grounding to keep people and equipment safe. Our licensed electricians evaluated the existing setup, installed protective devices, and verified performance under load to ensure the pool system in Charlotte operates safely season after season.

What We Installed and Serviced

  • 30A Double‑Pole GFCI Breaker: Installed and supplied a new 30A GFCI breaker to protect pool equipment. We tested operation and performed a full diagnostic with the breaker in place to confirm proper compatibility and function.
  • Safety Diagnostic: Inspected, tested, and analyzed the pool electrical system to identify any issues. If legacy equipment had not functioned with the GFCI, we were prepared to provide an updated estimate and repair plan.
  • Grounding System Upgrade: Drove a new ground rod (typical 8 ft) and replaced the grounding electrode conductor with a continuous run to the main service panel, within appropriate distance limits to help ensure low‑impedance fault paths and improved system safety.
  • Three Outdoor Panel Rejuvenations: Vacuumed and cleaned panels; re‑tensioned connections at ground lugs, bus bars, and main breakers; verified proper separation of neutrals and grounds (one conductor per lug); inspected for moisture and re‑sealed openings; confirmed correct line voltage; applied antioxidant where needed; and tested AFCI/GFCI devices with customer consent.
  • Panel Relocation and Mounting: Relocated the pool equipment panel and set double 4x4 pressure‑treated posts in concrete with horizontal backing to create a sturdy, code‑conscious mounting surface and maintain clear emergency access to the pool panel.

Why This Matters for Pool Safety

GFCI protection is essential around water and outdoor equipment. Proper grounding and tight, clean panel connections reduce the risk of shock, nuisance trips, and heat buildup at terminals. By relocating the pool panel and clearly maintaining access, first responders and homeowners have quicker, safer control during an emergency.

Code and Inspection Notes

As local jurisdictions implement newer NEC requirements, inspectors may call for AFCI upgrades on certain circuits. Adding AFCI protection can reveal preexisting wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—that cause immediate tripping and may require additional diagnostic time to resolve. Our team explains findings as we go and provides clear options and estimates when further work is recommended.
