Comprehensive Pool Electrical and 100A Subpanel in Mooresville, NC
On August 16, 2024, Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team completed a full pool electrical installation for homeowner Doug Hansen in Mooresville, NC. Led by technician Chris Rogers, the project delivered safe, reliable power for new pool equipment and lighting, with all permitting and inspection scheduling handled by our team.
From trenching and conduit to the subpanel, bonding, and equipment hookups, this Specialty project in our Pool & Hot Tub Electrical category was built to support today’s needs and future additions.
Scope of Work Completed
- 100A pool power distribution: Installed a Square D QO 100A two-pole breaker in the main panel and fed a new outdoor-rated 100A subpanel mounted on a post near the pool area.
- Space-making breakers: Added two 20A tandem Square D QO breakers to free up room for the pool breaker in the existing panel.
- Trenching and conduit: Trenched and backfilled approximately 170 feet at an 18–24 inch depth, then installed 170 feet of 1-1/2 inch PVC conduit with fittings and LBs. A PVC junction box on the exterior of the home was added to extend the pool conduit and wiring path.
- Feeder conductors: Pulled about 180 feet of THHN #2 conductors to supply the new subpanel.
- Equipment and lighting hookups: Installed flexible conduit and wiring from the subpanel to connect pool pump equipment and a pool light. Our team provided the THHN ground through the conduit with the light whip and worked with the customer-provided transformer components.
- GFCI protection for maintenance: Installed a GFCI receptacle with a weatherproof box and in-use cover, along with a GFCI breaker where needed for enhanced safety around water.
- Bonding and grounding: Established a bonding ring (bonding halo) around the pool, bonded all metal components and equipment, and included a water bond for added protection.
- Additional breakers: Added a standard 20A breaker and a 30A double-pole breaker to support associated pool-area loads.
- Permits and inspection: Submitted the permit and scheduled inspection with the local authority to close out the project properly.
- Manager Discount: A manager discount was applied to the final scope.
Why This Configuration Works
A dedicated 100A subpanel at the pool equipment pad centralizes control and leaves capacity for future upgrades like a heater, automation, or additional lighting. Running appropriately sized THHN feeders in 1-1/2 inch PVC conduit provides a durable pathway for conductors and simplifies serviceability. Together with a complete bonding ring and GFCI protection, the setup helps reduce shock risks and supports dependable pool operation season after season.
