Pool Bonding Inspection and Megger Testing in Chapel Hill, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a comprehensive pool bonding inspection and Megger testing for YMCA of the Triangle in Chapel Hill, NC. Led by technician Cody Perry, this Specialty service within our Pool & Hot Tub Electrical category was performed on September 16, 2025 to help ensure safe, code-compliant operation of the facility’s aquatic area.

Proper bonding prevents stray voltage and “tingle” hazards by creating a reliable, equipotential plane across all conductive components near the water. Our detailed process documents the condition of the bonding system and verifies resistance levels to a strict standard.

Why Pool Bonding Matters

In any pool environment, multiple pieces of metal—ladders, railings, diving board hardware, light niches, equipment, and even small fasteners—can become energized under fault conditions. A correct bonding network equalizes potential across these components, reduces shock risk, and supports National Electrical Code requirements for pools and spas.

Annual verification is especially important for commercial and community pools, where environmental factors, renovations, or equipment changes can alter bonding pathways over time.

Our Step-by-Step Bonding Check and Megger Procedure

  • Site preparation and shutdown: We turned off all pool equipment and any VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives) to eliminate interference and ensure accurate readings.
  • Bonding grid isolation: The bonding grid was safely disconnected from equipment in the machine room to isolate the grid for dedicated testing.
  • Metal identification and mapping: Every piece of metal in the pool area—down to the bolts on the diving board—was identified and included in a test diagram for full coverage.
  • Test setup: A bare copper test lead was run from the machine room bonding connection to the Megger, and from the Megger to each identified metal component in the pool area.
  • 500V Megger testing: We applied 500 volts through the Megger to gauge resistance in ohms between each target point and the bonding system.
  • Ohms of Resistance Log: Readings were recorded for every component and compared to the stringent 0.02Ω threshold used for this inspection.

If any readings differ from prior-year results or exceed the acceptance criteria, we recommend and perform further investigation to locate and correct issues before the pool is returned to normal operation.

Documentation and Safety Verification

For YMCA of the Triangle, our Raleigh branch produced a complete Ohms Log tied to the on-site metal map. This documentation provides a clear snapshot of bonding performance at the time of service and a solid reference point for future annual checks.

Our testing approach helps operators validate that each conductive component remains at an equal potential and within the target resistance range. Where variances are observed year-over-year, we pinpoint the cause—corrosion, loose terminations, replaced equipment, or construction changes—and recommend corrective action.

Commercial Pools, Scope, and Ongoing Maintenance

Larger commercial pools typically involve more components and longer test timelines. We tailor the inspection scope accordingly and advise on follow-up work if bonding upgrades or repairs are needed after testing. Annual or seasonal checks are a best practice to maintain safety, continuity, and accurate historical records.
