Specialty Pool Electrical in Matthews, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch completed a specialty pool and hot tub electrical service for homeowner Chip Dula in Matthews, NC. Led by technician Ben Lively, the project was completed on June 28, 2024 and focused on safe, code-compliant power and protection for outdoor living spaces, along with a comprehensive home electrical safety check.
Project Overview
Our team installed a complete pool bonding system, upgraded protection with a 20A GFCI breaker, added a weatherproof outdoor outlet, and routed new wiring through PVC conduit with proper burial. We also performed our Annual Home Safety Plan – GOLD inspection to verify that critical electrical systems in the home are operating safely.
- Pool bonding halo: Established an equipotential bonding loop tied to the pool equipment ground lug and bonded all required pool equipment.
- 20A GFCI breaker: Provides ground-fault protection appropriate for areas like bathrooms, laundry, garages, exteriors, crawl spaces, and basements.
- Landscape wire (#12): 50 feet rated for 20 amps at 150 volts with a minimum burial depth of 6 inches.
- 3/4" PVC conduit: 40 feet installed with connectors and LBs as needed for durability and protection.
- Standard receptacle with bubble cover: Weather-resistant outlet and in-use cover for safe outdoor use.
- Trenching 18–24 inches: Installed to specified depth for underground routing; utility locates (811) are essential before digging.
Why Pool Bonding Matters
A proper bonding halo helps equalize voltage around the pool area, reducing shock risk by keeping conductive components at the same electrical potential. For this Matthews project, we bonded the pool equipment and tied the bonding conductor to the equipment ground lug, supporting a safer swimming environment and alignment with electrical code requirements for pools and spas.
GFCI Protection and Weatherproof Power
We installed a 20A GFCI breaker to help protect against ground-fault hazards where moisture is present. For outdoor convenience and safety, we added a weatherproof outlet with a bubble cover so the receptacle remains protected whether or not a plug is inserted. Together, these upgrades support everyday use while prioritizing safety around water and the outdoors.
Underground Wiring, Conduit, and Trenching
Our team used 3/4-inch PVC conduit and #12 landscape wire to deliver power where it was needed, protecting conductors from the elements and physical damage. The wire was buried to a minimum depth of 6 inches, and trenching was completed to an 18–24 inch depth as specified for the route. Before any digging, it’s critical to contact 811 to identify and mark underground utilities.
Annual Home Safety Plan – GOLD Inspection
