Pendant light installation and switch replacement in Durham, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed a lighting upgrade for YMCA of the Triangle in Durham, NC on July 23, 2024. Lead technician Cody Perry installed new pendant/ceiling fixtures, replaced outdated switches, ran new 14/2 NM-B Romex for clean power delivery, and mounted a durable 4 ft LED vapor-tight garage light. The result is brighter, safer, and more efficient lighting tailored to the space.

Scope of work

3 pendant/ceiling fixtures installed (customer-supplied) on existing boxes/circuits.
3 standard light switches replaced for dependable control and smoother operation.
~50 ft of 14/2 NM-B Romex run for lighting circuits, neatly supported and terminated in approved junction boxes.
1 vapor-tight LED garage fixture mounted: 4 ft commercial wraparound, IP65 rated, 120–277V, ~3,600 lumens, 4000K bright white.
Cleared and moved materials as needed to safely hang lights and work efficiently.

How we completed the installation

Before any work began, we verified circuit capacity, shut off power at the panel, and protected adjacent surfaces. We then assembled and installed the three customer-supplied pendant/ceiling fixtures, ensuring proper box support, strain relief, and secure mounting hardware. Neutral and hot conductors were neatly landed and capped with listed connectors, and grounds were bonded to the metal boxes and fixtures per code.

To support the new layout, we routed approximately 50 feet of 14/2 NM-B Romex on 15-amp lighting circuits. The cable was stapled at proper intervals, terminated in junction boxes with strain relief, and labeled for clarity. We replaced three standard light switches, checked traveler and common terminations where applicable, and confirmed smooth, positive operation.

In the garage area, we installed a 4 ft IP65 vapor-tight LED fixture ideal for spaces exposed to moisture and dust. The multi-volt driver (120–277V) and ~3,600 lumen output at 4000K provide balanced, bright white illumination with excellent coverage. We sealed penetrations as needed for the vapor-tight rating, mounted to a solid surface, and verified gasket integrity.

After installation, we restored power, tested all switches and fixtures, verified light levels, and cleaned up the workspace so the area was ready for immediate use.
