Outlet & Switch Relocation and Lighting Upgrades in Winston-Salem

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive kitchen and living-area update for homeowner Don Whitsett in Winston-Salem, NC. Led by technicians Jack Mannino and Brad Williams, this project focused on safe, code-compliant outlet and switch relocation, strategic lighting enhancements, and appliance wiring. Completed on October 31, 2024, the upgrades were designed to improve safety, usability, and overall comfort.

What We Completed

Outlet relocation and additions: Moved receptacles for a new range and refrigerator and added/relocated several other outlets to match the new kitchen layout.
GFCI protection: Installed 4 GFCI outlets for enhanced safety in moisture-prone areas.
Switch updates: Relocated nearly all light switches, including 6 standard switches (2-way/3-way/4-way as needed) for more intuitive control.
Lighting changes: Removed 2 outdated fixtures and installed 3 customer-supplied fixtures (simple installs) plus 2 medium-difficulty fixtures such as pendants or a chandelier, all on existing boxes/circuits.
Under-cabinet lighting: Added task lighting under the cabinets and a new pantry light for better visibility and ambiance.
Appliance and range hood wiring: Wired and set receptacles/hard-wiring for customer-supplied appliances and added a range hood above the island.
Clean wiring practices: Ran approximately 50 ft of NM-B 14/2 Romex for lighting/general-purpose receptacles and performed about 60 ft of wire fishing to route conductors through finished areas with minimal disruption.

How We Deliver Quality Results

Our team began with a layout review to map new appliance locations, counter areas, and traffic patterns. We then planned outlet and switch positions to align with cabinetry and work zones. Using careful wire fishing techniques and new NM-B 14/2 runs as needed, we minimized wall and ceiling impact while meeting code requirements. Fixtures were mounted to existing boxes/circuits when appropriate, switches were labeled and tested for correct operation, and GFCIs were verified for proper trip/reset function.

Before wrapping up, we removed outdated fixtures, confirmed polarity and grounding at new receptacles, and performed a full functionality check so every switch and light behaved exactly as intended.

Home Safety Inspection Included

As part of the visit, the homeowner enrolled in our Annual Home Safety Plan – GOLD, which begins with a comprehensive Home Safety Inspection, including:

Panel inspection, voltage readings, and verification of proper bonding
Testing GFCIs and other home safety devices
Inspection of main electrical service components and grounding system
Checks of major appliance disconnects and home protection systems

This proactive evaluation helps identify issues early and supports long-term electrical reliability.
