Our Charlotte team (Matthews branch) completed a clean, code‑compliant outdoor subpanel installation and service upgrade for a home in Mint Hill, NC. Led by technician Tyquan Johnson, the project was finished on April 27, 2026 and focused on adding safe capacity for exterior circuits while modernizing grounding and surge protection.
For this Panels & Service Upgrades project, categorized under Subpanel Installation, we provided permitting, trenching, a new 4/0 SEU feeder, grounding enhancements with rods and #6 copper, and whole‑home surge protection for reliable, long‑term performance.
What we installed
- Electrical permit: We filed the electrical permit with the county to ensure inspections and compliance. Note: only the electrical permit is included; any non‑electrical permits required by the jurisdiction are separate.
- Outdoor midsize subpanel (12/24, up to 125A): Weather‑rated subpanel mounted outdoors to add capacity for present and future loads while keeping labeling, bonding, and clearances tidy and to code.
- New feeder with 4/0 SEU cable (approx. 75 ft): Heavy‑duty 3‑wire service‑rated cable to deliver dependable power from the service equipment to the new subpanel.
- Trenching (approx. 75 ft at 18–24 in.): Proper burial depth for protection and code compliance. Utility locating (811) is required prior to digging to prevent damage to underground services.
- Liquid‑tight flexible conduit (1‑1/2 in., approx. 15 ft): Used with appropriate fittings and terminations for a durable, weather‑resistant installation where flexibility is needed.
- Grounding upgrades: Installed new ground rods and ran #6 bare copper grounding conductors, bonding all connections securely for a low‑impedance path to earth.
- Special breaker: A specialty breaker was provided to properly match the system configuration and new equipment.
- Whole‑home surge protector ($10k / 3yr): Panel‑mounted SPD to divert excess voltage from lightning‑related surges and grid fluctuations, helping protect appliances and electronics. Coverage is secondary to home insurance and excludes direct lightning strikes.
