Project Overview
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team (Matthews branch) completed an outdoor pergola conduit and circuit installation for SunSouth Carolinas in Fort Mill, SC. Led by technician Christian Cedillos, the work was finished on August 7, 2025. This project extended power safely from the home to a backyard pergola by installing buried conduit and dedicated branch circuits for lighting and outlets.
Primary service category: Outlets & Switches | Secondary: Outlet Installation & Repair
Scope of Work
To deliver reliable power outdoors while protecting wiring from the elements and physical damage, our team installed a new underground pathway and pulled dedicated conductors for two circuits.
- Trenching: Approximately 14 feet trenched at an 18–24 inch depth from the home to the pergola.
- Conduit: About 70 feet of 3/4-inch PVC conduit, including mounting, connectors, and LBs as needed to provide a continuous protected raceway.
- Wiring – Power Circuit: About 120 feet of THHN #12 conductors, suitable for a 20-amp branch circuit to serve outdoor receptacles and higher-load devices.
- Wiring – Lighting Circuit: About 100 feet of THHN #14 conductors for a 15-amp circuit to supply pergola lighting and general-purpose loads.
- Two new branch circuits were routed from the home to the pergola through the underground conduit system for safe, dedicated power distribution.
This approach keeps conductors protected, reduces exposure to moisture and impact, and sets up the pergola area with separate capacity for lighting and outlets.
Benefits for Your Pergola or Outdoor Space
- Dedicated power where you need it: Separate lighting and receptacle circuits help minimize overloads and nuisance trips.
- Clean, protected installation: Buried PVC conduit safeguards wiring and maintains a neat look across the yard.
- Flexible use: Power outlets support outdoor appliances and entertainment, while the lighting circuit is optimized for fixtures and controls.
- Built for outdoor conditions: Materials and methods are selected for durability in exterior environments.
Our Process on This Fort Mill Project
We created a clear underground path at the proper depth, installed a continuous PVC conduit run with the necessary fittings, and pulled THHN conductors sized for each circuit’s intended use. The result is a tidy, robust installation that supports both outdoor outlets and lighting at the pergola.
Planning a similar project? Before any trenching, remember that underground utility locations must be identified through 811 to help prevent damage to buried lines.
