Outdoor NEMA 14-50 EV Charger Outlet Installation in Indian Trail
Completed on February 12, 2025, our Charlotte team from the Matthews branch installed a weatherproof NEMA 14-50 receptacle beside a carport for convenient Level 2 EV charging in Indian Trail, NC. Lead technician Tyler Harris handled the installation for customer Tyler LaShomb, delivering a clean, code-compliant solution that makes daily charging simple and reliable.
This project was planned around the customer’s parking routine, with the outlet positioned for safe cord routing and easy plug-in while preserving curb appeal and protection from the elements.
What We Installed
- NEMA 14-50 (240V) receptacle: Outdoor-rated with a weather-resistant in-use cover for Level 2 EV charging near the carport.
- Dedicated 50-amp breaker: New two-pole 50A breaker added in the interior electrical panel for dependable power delivery to the EV outlet.
- 6/3 NM-B copper wiring: Approximately 40 feet of 6/3 NM-B routed through crawl and attic spaces to reach the exterior location with secure support and protection.
- County electrical permit: Permit filed and inspection coordinated to verify compliance with local electrical code.
The NEMA 14-50 outlet supports many portable Level 2 EV chargers and provides flexibility for current and future vehicle needs. If a hardwired EVSE is preferred later, our team can adapt the circuit to suit the charging equipment’s requirements.
Installation Approach and Safety
We routed the circuit from the inside panel to the exterior mounting point, using crawlspace and attic access to keep cable runs protected and discreet. The weatherproof cover guards the receptacle from rain while allowing the charging cord to remain plugged in during use. All work was performed to meet current code requirements for a 50-amp, 240-volt branch circuit serving an outdoor receptacle.
Proper placement, clear labeling at the panel, and careful routing help ensure safe, dependable charging without cluttering the carport area.
Permitting in Indian Trail
Touchstone Electric filed the county electrical permit for this project and coordinated the required inspection. Please note: jurisdictions may require additional non-electrical permits (such as zoning, historic, or environmental) depending on the scope of work. Those permits are separate from the electrical permit and, if needed, are handled on a case-by-case basis.
Additional Electrical Improvements Completed
While on site, our crew also assisted with a few home upgrades to make the most of the visit:
- Replaced two customer-supplied bathroom exhaust fans, including housing swaps, minor drywall cuts, ductwork reconnection, and tie-in to the existing power.
- Installed a standard light/fixture switch on an existing circuit.
- Added approximately 20 feet of 14/2 NM-B for the lighting/switch work, as needed for a neat and functional finish.
- Brought an electrician wireman apprentice to assist, improving efficiency and workflow.
Bundling these tasks with the EV outlet installation reduced disruptions and kept everything coordinated under one visit.
