Outdoor GFCI Outlet Installation for a Grill Area in Waxhaw, NC
Our Charlotte team from the Matthews branch completed a fully permitted outdoor outlet project for a backyard grill area in Waxhaw, NC on June 4, 2026. The scope included trenching, PVC conduit and THHN wiring, a new GFCI-protected circuit from the panel, and a weather-resistant GFCI receptacle ready for outdoor cooking and entertainment.

What we did on this project
- Trenching: Approximately 105 feet of trenching at a depth of 18–24 inches to carry the new circuit safely outdoors. Utility-locate requirements (811) apply prior to any digging, and depth/placement followed best practices for protection.
- Conduit system: Installed PVC conduit (primarily 1-inch with select 3/4-inch sections) with the appropriate fittings, connectors, and LBs to create a continuous, watertight pathway from the home’s electrical panel to the grill location.
- Wiring: Pulled #6 THHN conductors through the conduit run to support high-power outdoor equipment and reduce voltage drop across the distance to the patio area.
- Panel protection: Added a new 40-amp GFCI breaker in the service panel to provide ground-fault protection for the entire circuit—an essential safety measure for outdoor and damp locations.
- Outdoor receptacle: Installed a weather-resistant GFCI outlet with an in-use, weatherproof cover at the grill area for safe and convenient power.
- Appliance-ready connection: Provided a code-compliant receptacle setup designed to serve the customer’s grill equipment during the same visit.
The result is a clean, durable installation that delivers reliable power to the grill station while prioritizing safety and compliance.
Permitting and code compliance
Touchstone Electric filed the electrical permit for this project and completed the work to current code standards for outdoor circuits, GFCI protection, burial depth, and weatherproof equipment ratings.
Note on permitting: The permit covered electrical work only. Some municipalities require additional non-electrical approvals (e.g., historic, environmental, or zoning). If a project needs permits outside of the electrical scope, those are handled separately.

Moisture and outdoor environments increase shock risk. A GFCI breaker and a weather-resistant GFCI receptacle work together to shut off power rapidly if a ground fault is detected.
