Outdoor GFCI Outlet & Sump Pump Circuit Installation in Concord, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team from our Matthews branch completed a reliable outdoor power solution for Cantey Foundation Specialists in Concord, NC. On December 6, 2024, technicians Patrick Burke and Ben Lively installed a dedicated sump pump circuit with a weatherproof GFCI outlet to ensure dependable operation and safe access to power outdoors.

Project overview
The goal was to run a new 20-amp circuit to power a sump pump and provide a weather-resistant GFCI receptacle that could be serviced easily. The installation needed to bridge an above-ground section between an electrical building and a cinder block wall, then transition to an underground conduit run to reach the pump location.
Because the source panel supplies a PLC panel, our team coordinated a planned shutdown to tie into the circuit safely with minimal disruption to operations.
What we installed
- EMT conduit run (1/2 in.) from the electrical building toward the sump pump location, with secure Unistrut supports between the structure and the cinder block wall for a neat, durable pathway.
- Wall penetration and junction box mounted on the inside of the cinder block wall to provide a clean transition point and service access.
- PVC conduit (1/2 in.) underground for the exterior segment to the pump, transitioning from EMT to PVC for corrosion resistance below grade.
- Trenching at approximately 12 in. depth for the underground portion to protect the wiring and conduit run. Utility locating was observed ahead of digging in accordance with best practices.
- Dedicated conductors pulled using THHN #12 wiring for a robust 20-amp outdoor circuit designed to handle pump startup loads and the GFCI receptacle.
- Weatherproof power point on a wood post set in concrete, complete with a GFCI receptacle and an in-use bubble cover to protect against rain and splashing while in operation.
- Planned panel shutdown of the source panel feeding the PLC equipment to perform tie-ins safely and restore power promptly once the work was complete.
- Two-man crew with an additional wireman on site to keep the project efficient, safe, and on schedule.
Why this approach works
Using EMT above ground provides a rigid, professional finish and excellent mechanical protection, while PVC underground resists moisture and corrosion. The Unistrut supports keep the EMT aligned and secure, reducing wear over time. A dedicated 20-amp circuit helps ensure the sump pump has the capacity it needs, and the outdoor GFCI adds critical shock protection in wet locations.
The in-use bubble cover keeps the outlet protected whether something is plugged in or not, extending the life of the receptacle and maintaining safe operation through the seasons.
