Outdoor GFCI Outlet & Dedicated 20A Circuit in Raleigh

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team provided a safe, code-compliant power solution for an outdoor smoker at a home in Raleigh, NC. On December 10, 2024, technician Brad Williams installed a weatherproof GFCI outlet under the porch and ran a dedicated 20-amp circuit from the exterior electrical panel to ensure dependable power without nuisance trips.

Homeowner Jennifer Porres wanted a reliable outdoor receptacle that could stand up to the elements and meet electrical safety standards. The finished installation blends neatly with the home’s exterior while prioritizing protection and performance.

Scope of Work

  • Ran approximately 50 feet of UF-B 12/2 direct-burial cable from the exterior panel, through the crawl space, and to the porch location.
  • Installed a 20A standard breaker in the exterior panel for a dedicated circuit serving the new outdoor receptacle.
  • Mounted a weatherproof exterior box under the porch and installed a GFCI receptacle for enhanced safety in a damp location.
  • Added an in-use “bubble” cover to protect the outlet whether or not a plug is connected, ensuring reliable operation during use.

How We Completed the Installation

Beginning at the exterior service panel, Brad routed the new circuit toward the porch using UF-B cable designed for underground and exterior applications. Where cable crossed grade, it was placed at code-compliant depth for direct burial—commonly 24 inches or 12 inches when GFCI protection applies—then transitioned through the crawl space and neatly secured along the path to the outlet location.

Under the porch, we set a durable, weatherproof box and terminated the circuit on a GFCI receptacle to ensure shock protection. A heavy-duty, in-use bubble cover was installed to keep moisture out and maintain protection even while the smoker or other outdoor equipment is plugged in. The new 20-amp breaker was labeled in the panel for easy identification.

Safety and Code Considerations

  • GFCI protection: Required for outdoor receptacles to reduce risk of shock in wet or damp environments.
  • In-use weather protection: The bubble cover keeps the outlet shielded from rain and splashes during operation.
  • Direct-burial wiring: UF-B cable is rated for underground use and installed at proper depth and routing per local code.
  • Dedicated capacity: A 20A breaker and circuit help support the smoker’s load without sharing with indoor circuits.

Benefits for Outdoor Cooking and Power

  • Reliable performance: A dedicated 20A line helps prevent tripped breakers when running a smoker, pellet grill, or other outdoor appliances.
  • Year-round readiness: Weatherproof components provide durable protection through changing Raleigh seasons.
  • Convenient access: The receptacle is placed under the porch for easy plugging while keeping cords off walkways.
  • Peace of mind: GFCI protection and proper installation practices support safer outdoor electrical use.
