Completed Project: Outdoor Gate Power & Conduit Installation in Charlotte, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team (Matthews branch) completed a full outdoor power run for the Davis Lake Community Association. Led by technician Danny Bishop, this project delivered safe, code-compliant power and low-voltage pathways to a new community gate. Completion date: March 31, 2025.

Scope of Work
- Ran approximately 230 feet of 3/4-inch PVC conduit from the clubhouse location to the gate area for the power circuit.
- Installed a two-gang box at the gate for a service disconnect and a general-use receptacle.
- Provided GFCI protection for exterior receptacles and weather-resistant in-use bubble covers to safeguard outlets year-round.
- Hardwired the gate power for a reliable, permanent connection.
- Added a dedicated low-voltage pathway by running 3/4-inch PVC conduit with a pull string for a future camera system.
- Electrical permit was filed with the county and work was performed to current code standards.
How We Delivered a Reliable, Code-Compliant Installation
Outdoor gate equipment demands dependable power and proper protection. Our team installed appropriately sized conductors for the 230-foot run to support performance over distance, protected the exterior outlets with GFCI, and provided a lockable service disconnect at the gate for safe maintenance.
Trenching for the conduit path was coordinated with the community and planned at a minimum 18-inch depth, aligning with common residential electrical standards for buried circuits. We also included a separate low-voltage conduit with pull string so camera wiring can be added cleanly without disturbing the new power installation.
Materials and Components Used
- PVC Conduit: 3/4-inch for the primary power run; 1-1/2-inch sections used where additional capacity or future-proofing was needed.
- THHN Conductors: #10 AWG for the long power run and #12 AWG where appropriate, sized to support distance and load.
- Overcurrent Protection: 20A standard breaker and exterior-rated 20A GFCI breaker(s) for receptacle protection.
- Receptacles and Covers: Weather-resistant outlets with in-use bubble covers for continuous protection.
- Gate Disconnect: Installed in a two-gang enclosure for safe servicing.
- Low-Voltage Conduit: 3/4-inch PVC with pull string dedicated to camera wiring.
- Miscellaneous: Connectors, junction fittings, LBs, and pull string to complete the pathway.
Permitting and Inspections
Touchstone Electric handled the electrical permit for this Charlotte project and completed the work to meet local code. Note: jurisdictions may require additional non-electrical permits (e.g., zoning, environmental, historic).
