Scope of Work at a Glance
- Installed a midsized, outdoor-rated subpanel fed by an 80A Eaton CH breaker.
- Pulled approximately 80 ft of #4 AWG THHN in 1-1/2 in. PVC conduit to provide the feeder.
- Added a dedicated spa circuit with 50A GFCI protection using #6 stranded conductors in 3/4 in. liquid-tight flex (about 20 ft).
- Built out two 20A branch circuits for the enclosure:
- One 20A circuit for can lights, a fan location, and outlets.
- One dedicated 20A circuit for a mini fridge.
- Installed four 6 in. wafer LED can lights and two new switches.
- Installed new receptacles: one GFCI outlet and additional standard outlets around the enclosure.
- Project support provided by two electrical apprentices under technician supervision.
- Trenching handled by the customer as coordinated in advance.
Why This Setup Works for Outdoor Spaces and Spas
An outdoor subpanel with an 80A feeder offers room for present and future circuits without overloading the home’s main panel. By placing distribution closer to the load, we reduce voltage drop on long runs and simplify maintenance and expansion.
The spa is protected with a 50A GFCI breaker, the standard safety approach for hot tubs and similar equipment in wet locations. Liquid-tight flexible conduit provides a durable, weather-resistant pathway to the spa equipment while allowing for equipment serviceability.
Inside the enclosure, we separated general lighting/outlet loads from the dedicated mini-fridge circuit to prevent nuisance trips when appliances start. The wafer-style LED can lights deliver bright, efficient lighting with a slim profile that fits tight ceiling spaces often found in outdoor structures.
Panels & Service Upgrades Expertise
This project falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Subpanel Installation services. Our team coordinated permitting as required and assembled a neat, labeled installation designed for straightforward inspection and future service.
- Neat panel layout with clearly labeled circuits.
- Durable PVC conduit for the feeder and liquid-tight flex for equipment connections.
- Appropriate GFCI protection where required.
Code and Safety Considerations
As local inspectors continue adopting updates from the 2020 NEC, some homes may be asked to add or change protective devices such as AFCI or GFCI breakers on certain circuits. Where these updates are required, our team explains options and can diagnose any pre-existing wiring conditions that surface during the process (for example, shared neutrals that can cause immediate tripping). Our goal is a safe, compliant system that performs reliably for years to come.
