New 20-Amp Circuit and Outlet Installation in Durham, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed a safe, code-compliant power expansion for a property in Durham, NC. On September 20, 2024, our technician Patrick Burke installed a dedicated 2-inch conduit to support a low-voltage provider and added new 20-amp circuits designed to feed approximately ten to twelve outlets. This project delivers reliable capacity for everyday power needs while keeping future upgrades in mind.

Project Overview

The customer needed robust, well-organized infrastructure for both standard receptacles and upcoming low-voltage work. Our team mapped a clean pathway for conduit and wiring, coordinated clear routing for the low-voltage vendor, and ensured safe terminations and labeling for easy maintenance.

  • Service area: Durham, NC (Raleigh branch)
  • Primary service: Outlets & Switches
  • Specialty: Outlet Installation & Repair
  • Technician: Patrick Burke
  • Completion date: September 20, 2024

Scope of Work

We focused on a durable, professional installation that supports present power needs and future modifications:

  • Installed a 2-inch PVC conduit to accommodate the low-voltage company’s cabling and maintain clean separation from line-voltage runs.
  • Routed approximately 75 feet of 1/2-inch EMT with secure supports, fittings, and junction points for a tidy, serviceable layout.
  • Mounted a 4x8 plywood backboard to provide a neat, central location for device mounting and future low-voltage components.
  • Pulled about 85 feet of THHN #12 conductors to serve new 20-amp branch circuits feeding 10–12 outlets.
  • Installed and terminated two 20-amp breakers dedicated to these receptacle circuits.
  • Used a 25-foot scissor lift to safely access elevated pathways and maintain precise conduit alignment.

All terminations were tightened to spec, boxes were set at practical heights, and conductor routing was organized for clarity and serviceability.

Safety, Code, and Quality

We emphasize code-compliant workmanship on every project. Conductors were sized for the load, raceways were supported at proper intervals, and receptacle placement was planned for convenience and accessibility. The finished circuits were tested for correct polarity and grounding continuity, supporting safe operation for connected devices. Where applicable, protective measures were considered based on the space and usage.

Materials and Equipment Used

  • Conduit EMT (1/2 inch) with appropriate connectors, straps, and LBs
  • Conduit PVC (2 inch) for low-voltage pathway coordination
  • THHN #12 conductors for 20-amp branch circuits
  • Two standard 20-amp breakers
  • 4x8 plywood backboard for clean device and cable management
  • 25-foot scissor lift for safe overhead work

Results for the Property

The property now benefits from increased capacity, better organization for low-voltage expansion, and cleaner cable management. The new 20-amp circuits provide dependable power for general receptacles and higher-demand devices, while the conduit framework keeps everything accessible for future service. The streamlined installation helps minimize clutter and makes future additions more efficient.
