NEC-Compliant Pool Bonding and Equipment Grounding in Chimney Rock
On June 2, 2025, Touchstone Electric’s Asheville team completed a Specialty service in the Pool & Hot Tub Electrical category for Signature Luxury Pools in Chimney Rock, NC. Led by technician Chris Rogers, the project focused on establishing a safe, code-compliant bonding system and grounding for new pool equipment in accordance with NEC 680.26.
Proper bonding and grounding are essential for pool safety. By equalizing electrical potential around the water and equipment, bonding helps reduce the risk of electrical shock, while grounding provides a reliable path for fault currents. Together, they protect people, equipment, and property and support smooth inspections and ongoing maintenance.
Scope of Work Completed
Our work centered on creating a continuous bonding system that ties all metallic components together and safely connects to the pool equipment grounding point. We completed the following per NEC 680.26:
- Installed a continuous #8 bare copper bonding halo around the pool perimeter.
- Ran the bonding conductor to the ground lug on the pool equipment.
- Bonded all pool equipment to create a unified, low-impedance path and maintain an equipotential bonding grid.
This approach helps minimize voltage differences between conductive parts around the pool and ensures that any fault current is safely directed away from swimmers and outdoor living spaces.
Why Bonding and Grounding Matter for Pools
- Safety at the water’s edge: The bonding halo reduces touch voltage around the pool deck, coping, and equipment areas.
- Equipment protection: Proper grounding supports the operation of protective devices and helps safeguard pumps, heaters, and controls.
- Code compliance: Meeting NEC 680.26 requirements supports inspections and documentation for new builds and renovations.
- Peace of mind: A well-executed bonding system is a long-term safety investment for homeowners and pool professionals alike.
