Electrical Repairs & Troubleshooting in Mint Hill, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Matthews-based Charlotte team completed a comprehensive repair and cleanup for homeowner Michael J Allen in Mint Hill, NC on October 22, 2024. Led by technician Ben Lively, this Electrical Repairs & Troubleshooting project focused on securing loose wiring, correcting outdoor deck wiring, and installing a safe, dedicated circuit with a disconnect for the home’s water heater.

Our goal was to restore safety, reliability, and code-correct workmanship throughout the attic, crawl space, and back deck while leaving the area neat and organized.

What We Fixed and Improved

  • Attic safety and cleanup: We stapled all loose cables, placed open splices into proper junction boxes, and installed covers on all accessible boxes. Unnecessary conductors and an extension cord that had been used inside a box were removed to eliminate hazards and meet best practices.
  • Back deck corrections: The deck flood light and switch were re-fed properly from the crawl space. We sleeved the exterior wiring in flexible liquidtight conduit and installed appropriate connectors to protect the conductors from weather and physical damage.
  • Water heater circuit and disconnect: We ran a new dedicated circuit to the water heater using NM-B 10/2 cable and installed an equipment disconnect (≤60A) so power can be safely isolated during maintenance. Portions of the run were protected with EMT and liquidtight conduit where needed.
  • Crawl space tune-up: We rehung wires for proper support, verified terminations, tested GFCIs for safety, and installed faceplates on outlets to deliver a clean, finished result.

By addressing these items together, we resolved immediate concerns and reduced future points of failure, especially in areas exposed to moisture and movement.

Why This Work Matters

  • Safety first: Secured cables and enclosed splices reduce fire and shock risks while aligning with current electrical standards.
  • Outdoor durability: Liquidtight flex and proper connectors protect deck wiring from UV, moisture, and physical impact.
  • Serviceability: A dedicated water heater disconnect allows quick power isolation for safe maintenance and faster troubleshooting.
  • Reliability: Clean cable management and corrected feeds help prevent nuisance trips and intermittent issues.
  • Neat finish: Labeled junctions, covers, and faceplates deliver a tidy, professional look that makes future work simpler.

Materials and Methods Used

To complete the project, our team utilized NM-B 10/2 cable for the new water heater circuit, installed an equipment pull-out disconnect, and added junction boxes with covers to protect all splices. We incorporated EMT and liquidtight flexible conduit where mechanical protection or weather resistance was required and secured all wiring with proper supports. In the crawl space, we rehung cables, checked connections, tested GFCIs, and finished each device with a protective faceplate.
