Completed Electrical Panel Upgrade in Mint Hill, NC
Our Charlotte team from the Matthews branch completed a comprehensive panel and service upgrade for homeowner Sadie Evans in Mint Hill. This project brought the home’s main service equipment up to current code, improved grounding and surge protection, and prepared the system for present and future electrical demands. The work was completed with permitting and inspection coordination for a smooth, compliant experience.
Scope of Work
- Main Service Panel Replacement: Installed a new 150A outdoor aluminum main panel. We grounded and bonded the panel, neatly labeled circuits, and reconnected existing branch circuits for a clean, code-compliant finish.
- Service Riser with Weatherhead: Installed a code-compliant riser and weatherhead assembly using IMC conduit to protect service conductors and ensure a proper drip loop and mast termination.
- Upgraded Grounding System: Drove new ground rods and ran a #6 bare copper grounding electrode conductor (GEC) from the rods to the main service, with secure, listed clamps and terminations to meet NEC requirements.
- Feeder Cable (SER): Installed a 4-wire SER feeder between the main panel and a subpanel location to provide a reliable, balanced 120/240V supply with separate neutral and equipment ground conductors.
- New Breakers Installed: Added dedicated breakers sized for the home’s loads, including three 30A two-pole breakers, one 50A standard breaker, and two specialty breakers as required for the equipment on site.
- Permitting & Inspection: Filed the electrical permit with the county and coordinated inspection. Note: Only the electrical permit was included; non-electrical permits vary by jurisdiction and are not included.
Power was temporarily disconnected during the panel changeover, and our crew worked efficiently to limit downtime while maintaining a clean, safe workspace.
Why This Upgrade Matters
Older or overloaded panels can lead to nuisance tripping, hot breakers, and safety hazards. This Panels & Service Upgrades project in Mint Hill modernized the service equipment, improved fault clearing with proper grounding, and added capacity for today’s high-demand appliances and systems.
As local inspectors implement newer code cycles, some homes may also require updates like AFCI or GFCI protection on specific circuits. Our licensed electricians evaluate these requirements on-site and provide clear options to keep your installation compliant and dependable.
