After-Hours Meter Riser and Grounding Upgrade in Spartanburg, SC

Touchstone Electric completed an after-hours service upgrade for Edna Tinsley in Spartanburg, SC. Led by technician Brad Anderson from our Greenville branch in Taylors, this project focused on safety, reliability, and code compliance. The scope included installing a new meter base riser with weatherhead and upgrading the home’s grounding system with a driven ground rod and a continuous grounding electrode conductor (GEC) to the main service panel.

Completed on October 21, 2024, the work was performed after hours to quickly restore peace of mind. Following the project, Edna Tinsley praised our team with a positive review.

Scope of Work Performed

  • Meter Base Riser with Weatherhead: Included permitting, installation of IMC conduit from the meter base to the weatherhead, secure strapping, a roof boot at the penetration, and new service-entrance cable from the meter to the weatherhead. Note: this line item did not include the meter base or the grounding system.
  • Ground Rods Upgrade: Drove a new ground rod (typically about 8 ft) and replaced the existing GEC with a continuous conductor routed all the way to the main service panel. The run was kept within the 25 ft guideline listed for this project.
  • After-Hours Service Call: Dispatched outside regular business hours. The service call charge included a credit applied toward invoiced work, with an after-hours premium as noted and subject to availability.

Why This Upgrade Matters

  • Safety: A properly installed weatherhead and service riser protect conductors from weather intrusion, while a driven ground rod and continuous GEC improve fault clearing and reduce shock risk.
  • Code Compliance: Ensuring a continuous grounding electrode conductor and solid terminations supports compliance with current electrical standards.
  • Reliability: A secure service mast and weather-sealed roof penetration help prevent moisture-related failures and extend equipment life.
  • Future-Ready: Establishes a strong foundation for any future service or panel capacity upgrades.

What Spartanburg Homeowners Can Expect

  • Permitting included for the meter riser work performed.
  • Clean, sealed roof penetration using a roof boot for long-term weather resistance.
  • Continuous GEC with proper bonding and secure terminations back to the main service panel.
  • Clear documentation of the materials and methods used for your records.

Every property is unique. Our licensed electricians evaluate existing equipment, grounding electrodes, and conductor routing to deliver durable, code-aligned solutions tailored to the home.
