200A Meter Base and Panel Upgrade Completed in Durham
Touchstone Electric recently completed a major electrical service upgrade for Julie McCray in Durham. Our Raleigh team, including Joseph Portillo and Cody Perry, replaced the existing meter and panel equipment with a new 200-amp meter/panel combo designed to provide dependable capacity for the home’s electrical needs.
This project involved coordinating the required power interruption with the utility provider, completing permit-related work, and installing the new meter and panel combination. A service upgrade can help support modern household electrical demands, including large appliances and dedicated equipment that require properly sized breakers and reliable panel capacity.
New Meter/Panel Combo with Aluminum Bus Bar
The completed installation included a 200-amp over/under meter and panel combo with feed-through lugs and a new aluminum bus bar. Combining the meter base and electrical panel into one coordinated installation helps address key components of the home’s service equipment at the same time.
During the upgrade, our electricians also updated breakers for the home’s electrical distribution needs. The work included two 100-amp two-pole breakers for subpanel applications, one 40-amp standard breaker, and four 30-amp double-pole standard breakers. Correct breaker sizing and installation are important for circuits serving equipment such as dryers, water heaters, air conditioners, spas, EV chargers, and other high-demand appliances.
Grounding System Upgrade with New Ground Rods
A properly installed grounding system is an essential part of an electrical service upgrade. For this Durham project, Touchstone Electric installed new ground rods and connected the grounding electrode conductor to the main electrical service equipment using suitable clamps and secure connections.
The grounding work included driving the rods into the ground, running the required grounding conductor, and completing the connections between the grounding electrodes and service panel. This upgrade helps bring the service equipment together with an appropriately updated grounding system.
Whole-Home Surge Protection Added
To add another layer of protection at the electrical service, the project included whole-house surge protection rated at 10 kA. A whole-home surge protector is installed at the electrical panel and is intended to help reduce exposure to electrical surges that can affect connected equipment and appliances throughout the home.
The installed surge protection includes a three-year warranty. The meter base installation includes a 20-year transferable warranty, and the completed workmanship is backed by Touchstone Electric’s lifetime craftsmanship warranty.
