Meter Base & Service Upgrade in Spartanburg, SC

Our Greenville team, based in Taylors, completed a permitted meter base and service upgrade for homeowner Wade Woodward in Spartanburg. Led by technician Brian Cain and completed on January 5, 2024, this project modernized the home’s electrical infrastructure with a new exterior meter base, a 100A subpanel in the laundry room, improved grounding, whole-home surge protection, and multiple GFCI safety upgrades.

This job fits our core specialties in Panels & Service Upgrades and Meter Base & Service Replacement, delivering safer, code-compliant power for daily living and seasonal loads like air conditioning.

Scope of Work

  • New exterior meter base (125A) installed to replace aging equipment and support a clean, reliable utility connection.
  • 100A subpanel installed in the laundry room to replace the existing panel and improve circuit organization and capacity.
  • A/C rewiring off the new exterior service to address a severely rusted old disconnect and ensure dependable cooling-season performance.
  • GFCI protection upgrades for safety in required areas:
    • (2) ivory GFCI outlets in the kitchen
    • (1) ivory GFCI outlet serving bathroom receptacles
    • (2) weatherproof GFCI outlets with covers for the front and back of the home
  • Grounding upgrade with (2) new ground rods for a robust grounding electrode system.
  • Whole-home surge protection to safeguard sensitive electronics and appliances from voltage spikes.
  • Electrical permit pulled for the project and work performed to current code requirements.

Code Compliance, Safety, and Reliability

Modern electrical systems hinge on proper grounding, GFCI protection, and a secure service entrance. By upgrading the meter base and installing a new subpanel, we improved fault clearing, reduced nuisance issues tied to outdated components, and set the home up for safer, more reliable power distribution. The addition of whole-home surge protection helps defend the home’s electronics from transient surges commonly caused by storms and grid events in Spartanburg.

What to Expect During a Service Upgrade

  • Planned power outage: Utility disconnects are scheduled; power can be out for a day or two depending on utility coordination and inspection timing.
  • Possible drywall work: Sheet rock may need to be cut in the laundry room to install the new subpanel. Touchstone Electric is not responsible for sheet rock repair or painting.
  • Permitting and inspection: We coordinate the permit and inspection process to ensure everything is safe and compliant when power is restored.

Annual Home Safety Membership – Gold

As part of this project, the homeowner enrolled in our Annual Home Safety Membership – Gold. This proactive program includes checks for smoke/CO detectors, panel safety, code updates, and identification of loose, worn, or deteriorated connections with properly sealed terminations—helping keep the home’s electrical system safe year-round.
