Project overview – Charlotte, NC

Our Charlotte branch completed a meter base and service riser installation with a full grounding upgrade for homeowner Chase Metheney in Charlotte, NC. Led by licensed electrician Jose Rodriguez, this project modernized the service entrance, improved weather protection, and ensured a solid grounding path to the home’s main electrical service panel. Work was completed on July 30, 2025.

As part of our Panels & Service Upgrades and Meter Base & Service Replacement services, we handled the end-to-end scope, from permitting through final testing, to deliver a code-compliant, utility-ready installation.

Scope of work completed

  • Meter base and service riser assembly: Installed a new service riser with a weatherhead to protect conductors from moisture intrusion and provide proper drip-loop clearance. We used durable IMC conduit from the meter base to the weatherhead, secured with corrosion-resistant straps, and sealed the roof penetration with a professional roof boot.
  • Service entrance conductors: Ran new service entrance cable from the meter location up to the weatherhead, ensuring correct conductor sizing, secure terminations, and neat routing for long-term reliability.
  • Grounding system upgrade: Drove two ground rods to the proper depth and spacing, bonded them with listed clamps, and ran a grounding electrode conductor to the home’s main electrical service panel. All grounding connections were tightened and verified for a low-impedance path to earth.
  • Permitting and inspection coordination: Secured the required local permits in Charlotte and coordinated inspection in accordance with utility requirements and applicable electrical codes.
  • Final verification: Performed continuity checks, torque verification on terminations, and visual inspection of weather seals and supports to ensure a safe, clean, and professional finish.

Why this upgrade matters

  • Safety: A properly sized, supported, and sealed service riser with a weatherhead reduces moisture entry and mechanical strain on service conductors.
  • Code compliance: Modern grounding with two driven rods and a bonded grounding electrode conductor helps ensure the system meets local requirements.
  • Reliability: New conductors, secure straps, and a roof boot add durability and reduce maintenance issues caused by weather and vibration.
  • Utility-ready: Clean terminations and clear working space make utility reconnection and future service simpler.
