Megger Testing & Home Electrical Inspection in Kannapolis, NC

Customer: Divine Restoration Group

Service categories: Electrical Repairs & Troubleshooting, Home Electrical Inspection

Branch: Charlotte (Matthews-based team) | Technician: Ben Lively

Date completed: December 11, 2024

Touchstone Electric was called to perform a post-fire electrical inspection and megger testing for a residence in Kannapolis. Our goal was to verify insulation integrity, identify damaged conductors, and map circuits to ensure the electrical system can be safely restored.

Why megger testing after a house fire?

Heat, soot, and moisture from a fire can degrade wire insulation and create hidden faults. Insulation resistance testing (often called “megger testing”) applies a controlled high test voltage to help reveal breakdowns that standard spot checks may miss. For fire-damaged homes, this testing is a key step before repairs, reinstallation of devices, and final inspection.

Scope of work

  • Removed every outlet and switch to isolate conductors for accurate testing and tracing.
  • Performed insulation resistance testing across all accessible circuits using appropriate test voltages up to 1000V.
  • Traced branch circuits throughout the home, including legs associated with 3-way switching, to verify continuity and routing.
  • Documented results and prepared for a complimentary re-device of outlets and switches once the project is cleared to proceed.
  • Coordinated work with on-site conditions related to the fire investigation.

Key findings and on-site challenges

  • We were unable to complete a full megger test on some circuits due to ungrounded conditions.
  • The circuit feeding the room where the fire occurred was identified as ungrounded.
  • A circuit tracer confirmed the affected circuit read back to the panel; however, the path was lost in the ceiling of the room impacted by the fire.
  • Access to the fire-damaged room was restricted; items could not be moved due to an active fire investigation, limiting complete inspection and testing in that area.
  • All devices (switches and receptacles) were safely removed for testing and will be reinstalled once the project is cleared to continue.

What happens next

When the property is cleared for access, our Charlotte team will return to:

  • Complete insulation resistance testing on any circuits deferred due to access or grounding limitations.
  • Address grounding issues discovered during testing and tracing.
  • Reinstall devices with a complimentary re-device to ensure secure terminations and reliable operation.
  • Perform final verification and provide documentation of test results for the project record.

Our step-by-step approach helps ensure the home’s electrical system is safe, clearly documented, and ready for the next phase of restoration.
