Touchstone Electric recently completed a manual transfer switch and generator interlock installation for homeowner Jennifer Baum in Raleigh, NC. Performed by our Raleigh branch technician, Brad Williams, this project created a safe, simple way to power essential circuits with a portable generator through a dedicated 50A inlet. Completed on February 9, 2026, the work ensures reliable backup power during neighborhood outages while protecting the home’s electrical system.
Project overview
To prepare the electrical panel for generator use, we reconfigured the interior layout so the new generator breaker and the customer’s selected backed-up circuits are positioned at the top-left of the panel. We installed an interlock kit on the face of the panel that ties the main breaker and generator breaker together, preventing unsafe backfeed and ensuring a clear, safe operating sequence during an outage.
From the panel, our team ran up to 15 feet of feeder to a dedicated, exterior-mounted generator inlet near the garage. We also provided a 15-foot whip that can be stored with the generator, making it quick and convenient to connect when the power goes out. To make operation easy, we applied clear sticker code labeling on the panel and breakers so the homeowner knows exactly which switches to operate and in what order.
How a generator interlock helps in Raleigh outages
An interlock functions as a manual transfer mechanism that ensures only one power source feeds the home’s panel at a time. When the generator breaker is engaged, the interlock physically prevents the main breaker from being on, and vice versa. For Raleigh homeowners, this approach offers a dependable and straightforward way to run key circuits during storms without risking backfeed to the utility grid or damage to equipment.
