Manual Transfer Switch and Surge Protection in Taylors, SC

Our Greenville branch completed a whole-home generator readiness project for homeowner Guy Bignell in Taylors, SC. Led by technician Danny Bishop, the job paired a manual transfer solution with a new generator inlet and whole-house surge protection to deliver safe, reliable backup power and protection for sensitive electronics. Completed on January 22, 2026, the installation ensures this home is prepared for the next outage and everyday power fluctuations.

What We Installed

  • Electrical permit filed: We handled the electrical permit with the county to ensure a compliant installation.
  • Panel reconfiguration and interlock: We reconfigured the electrical panel so the generator breaker and the selected home circuits are positioned at the top-left of the panel, then installed a manual interlock kit on the panel face to prevent dangerous backfeed to the utility.
  • 50-amp generator breaker: Installed as part of the manual transfer setup.
  • Generator inlet and feeder: Routed up to 15 feet of feeder from the panel to a mounted generator inlet and supplied a 15-foot whip to connect the portable generator when needed.
  • Clear labeling: Added code-compliant labels so the homeowner knows exactly which breakers to operate during an outage.
  • Whole-house surge protection: Installed a surge protective device at the main panel to divert excess voltage to ground, guarding connected systems and appliances against spikes from storms, utility events, and large equipment cycling.

Not included: Conduit (if required) and a portable generator were not part of this scope.

Why Choose a Manual Transfer Switch with Interlock?

  • Safety first: The interlock prevents utility and generator power from being on at the same time, protecting your home, equipment, and utility workers.
  • Straightforward operation: Clear breaker positions and panel labels make it simple to power selected circuits during an outage.
  • Cost-effective: Uses your existing panel with a dedicated breaker and inlet—no need for a separate subpanel in many homes.
  • Flexible coverage: Prioritize essential circuits like refrigeration, lighting, and outlets you rely on most.

Benefits of Whole-House Surge Protection

  • All-home defense: Installed at the main panel to help shield your entire electrical system.
  • Protects appliances and electronics: Helps reduce damage from voltage spikes tied to lightning, grid fluctuations, or large appliances turning on and off.
  • Equipment longevity: Reduces cumulative wear on sensitive internal components over time.
  • Installed by pros: Proper placement and bonding ensure the device can safely divert excess energy to ground.

Permitting and Compliance

Touchstone Electric filed the electrical permit for this project. Some jurisdictions may require additional non-electrical permits (such as zoning, environmental, septic, or historic review). Those are not included and, if applicable, are handled by the homeowner or quoted separately. Our team will always advise you on requirements specific to your property before work begins.
