Reliable Manual Transfer Switch & Generator Inlet Installation in Catawba, NC
Our Charlotte branch completed a Whole-Home Generators project focused on a Manual Transfer Switch for homeowner Don Davis in Catawba, NC. On November 5, 2024, technician Christian Cedillos installed a 50A interlock-style manual transfer switch with a generator inlet and whip, reconfigured the main panel for backup power, and added a midsize subpanel to support essential circuits.
Project Overview
This installation gives the homeowner a safe, straightforward way to power selected circuits during an outage using a portable generator. We reworked the panel layout so the new generator breaker and the backed-up circuits are positioned at the top-left of the panel, then added a listed interlock kit on the panel face to prevent backfeed and protect both utility workers and the home’s electrical system.
From the panel, we ran a feeder to a dedicated generator inlet and supplied a matching 15-foot whip so the generator can be quickly connected when needed. To organize and expand capacity, we installed a midsize indoor subpanel and populated it with new breakers for small appliance loads.
What We Installed
- 50A interlock manual transfer setup: Generator breaker installed with a listed interlock kit to mechanically prevent the utility main and generator from being on at the same time.
- Panel reconfiguration: Strategic relocation and splicing of circuits (as needed) to group priority loads for backup at the top-left of the main panel.
- Generator inlet and feeder: Up to 15 feet of feeder from the panel to a mounted inlet for plug-in generator connection.
- 15-foot generator whip: Provided to mate the portable generator to the inlet during outages.
- Midsize indoor subpanel (12/24, up to 125A): Added to better organize critical and small-appliance circuits.
- New breakers installed: Eight 20A standard single-pole breakers and one 20A standard double-pole breaker for small appliance circuits.
- Clear labeling: We sticker-coded the panel so it’s easy to identify which breakers to operate when switching to generator power.
Safety, Code, and Inspection Notes
Safety is central to every generator connection we install. The interlock kit ensures the home cannot backfeed the utility, protecting people and equipment. As inspectors adopt 2020 NEC requirements in our region, some homes may be asked to upgrade certain circuits to AFCI protection. In rare cases, preexisting conditions (like shared neutrals) can cause nuisance tripping and require additional diagnostic time to correct.
