Project overview for Candler, NC
On December 19, 2025, Touchstone Electric’s Asheville team, led by technician Aaron Smith, completed a manual generator transfer switch installation, a small indoor subpanel, and a full panel rejuvenation for homeowner Laura Brown in Candler, NC. This project ensures safe, code-compliant switching to generator power during outages and organizes critical loads for dependable backup.
Following completion, Laura Brown praised our work in her review. Our goal on every visit is the same: clean workmanship, clear labeling, and a system that’s ready when you need it most.
What we installed and upgraded
- Manual transfer switch (customer-provided): Installed at the basement main panel using the homeowner’s marked backup circuits. This switch provides safe, straightforward changeover between utility and generator power while preventing dangerous backfeeding.
- Small indoor subpanel (4/8, up to 125A): Added to organize essential loads and make future changes easier. Permitting included as part of this scope.
- Panel rejuvenation: Vacuumed and cleaned the panel, re-tensioned all connections, verified proper ground/neutral separation with one conductor per lug, inspected for moisture, and sealed openings. We confirmed incoming voltage, applied antioxidant to conductors as needed, and tested AFCI/GFCI operation with customer consent.
- New wiring runs: Pulled NM-B 6/3 cable for 50-amp, 240-volt needs supporting higher-demand equipment, and ran NM-B 12/2 for 20-amp branch circuits feeding selected backup loads.
- Major appliance hookup (customer-supplied): Installed the dedicated receptacle or hard-wired connection during the same visit, integrating it neatly into the updated layout.
The result is a generator-ready electrical system with clearly labeled circuits and a tidy, serviceable layout that supports reliable emergency power in Candler, NC.
Why choose a manual transfer switch for outages?
- Safety first: Positively isolates utility from generator power, helping protect your home and utility crews.
- Targeted backup: Directs generator capacity to essentials like lighting, refrigeration, well pumps, or key outlets.
- Simple operation: Labeled circuits and clear switching positions make storm prep and restoration straightforward.
- Cost-effective: A smart path to reliable backup without the expense of a fully automatic system.
Code and inspection considerations (NEC 2020)
As local inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020 in Western North Carolina, some homes may require AFCI upgrades on certain circuits. Adding AFCI protection can reveal preexisting conditions—such as shared neutrals—that may cause immediate tripping. When this occurs, careful diagnostics are needed to locate and correct the issue, which can involve opening fixtures or devices on the affected runs.
We communicate these possibilities up front, explain options, and perform diagnostics only with your approval so you can make informed decisions about safety and compliance.
