Comprehensive Panel Replacements and Code Upgrades in Monroe, NC

Our Charlotte branch (based in Matthews) completed a multi-panel upgrade for a Monroe, NC residence on January 31, 2025. Led by technician Chris Rogers, we partnered with Rick Roberts (Contractor) to replace aging equipment, expand capacity, and bring the electrical system up to current code.

This project falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades services and was planned to minimize downtime while improving safety, reliability, and future expansion options.

What We Upgraded

  • Four 150-amp outdoor main panels: Fully replaced and brought to current electrical code. We installed new main lugs, labeled each panel, reconnected the service entrance cable, and tied in existing branch circuits. Each panel was properly grounded and bonded.
  • Whole-home surge protection: A surge protector with a $10k warranty was included to help protect connected devices from damaging voltage spikes.
  • Indoor distribution: Installed three midsized indoor subpanels (12/24, up to 125 amps) to organize circuits and support future needs.
  • Feeder upgrades: Pulled approximately 120 ft of SER #2 (4-wire) from the main panels to the new subpanels for safe, code-compliant 4‑wire feeds.
  • Breaker updates: Replaced and added breakers to match loads and improve safety: ten 20‑amp, one 15‑amp, three 30‑amp double‑pole, two 40‑amp, and two 50‑amp breakers.
  • Electrical cleanup: Verified tight, correct terminations, removed abandoned conductors, and safely terminated any open hot wires.
  • Interior panel repairs: Repaired and updated the interior panel to meet current code requirements.

Each new panel carries a 20-year transferable panel warranty. As with any major service upgrade, we notified the client that any additional safety issues found during work would be reviewed with them, and we would provide an estimate before proceeding.

Built for Safety and Compliance

Inspectors in our area are increasingly enforcing NEC 2020 requirements. In some cases, this can mean adding or upgrading to AFCI protection on affected circuits. We advised the client that AFCI installations can expose preexisting wiring conditions (for example, shared neutrals), which may require additional diagnostics to resolve nuisance tripping. Our team is prepared to troubleshoot these conditions methodically to restore proper operation while keeping the system compliant.

Outside equipment was specifically addressed to remove outdated practices, improve bonding/grounding, and provide clear labeling for safer serviceability.

Permits, Inspections, and Power Planning

We handled the electrical permit and coordinated inspections to ensure a smooth approval process. During the panel changeover, power must be temporarily disconnected; to help the homeowner stay comfortable, Touchstone Electric provided a generator for limited power use during the outage.

Added Value: Annual Home Safety Plan – GOLD

As part of this project, the homeowner enrolled in our GOLD Membership, which begins with a Home Safety Inspection:

  • Panel inspection: voltage readings, bus bar condition, KO seals, and bonding
  • Site testing of surge protection and service disconnects
  • Main service review: meter base, feeders, weatherhead/riser, grounding, and moisture checks
  • Safety systems check: Smoke/CO detectors, security, and camera systems
  • HVAC and major appliance disconnects
  • GFCI testing

Gold Members also receive extended workmanship warranty on Touchstone Electric work, an 8% discount on today’s work (up to the program’s maximum), and $0 dispatch and diagnostic fees for future visits.
