Project overview in Waxhaw, NC
On January 7, 2025, our Charlotte team (Matthews branch) completed a full main electrical panel replacement and whole‑home surge protection upgrade for homeowner Ed Hill in Waxhaw, NC. Lead technician Viktor Opalko handled the installation. This project was fully permitted and inspected, bringing the home’s electrical system up to current code for safety and reliability.
Category: Panels & Service Upgrades | Subcategory: Electrical Panel Upgrades
Scope of work completed
- Permit pulled and inspection coordinated to ensure code compliance from start to finish.
- Main panel replacement (indoor, 200A) featuring an aluminum bus with a transferrable 20‑year warranty. We grounded and bonded the new panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, relabeled all circuits, and sealed all knockouts for a clean, safe finish.
- Code‑compliant breakers installed across the home’s essential circuits:
- GFCI protection for locations such as bathrooms, kitchen receptacles, laundry, garage, exterior, crawl spaces, and basements.
- Standard 15A and 20A breakers for general lighting and small‑appliance circuits.
- Double‑pole breakers sized for major loads like the range, dryer, water heater, HVAC/condensers, spa, EV charger, and a subpanel.
- Whole‑home surge protection installed at the main panel to divert damaging voltage spikes to ground and help protect sensitive electronics and appliances.
- Temporary power option available during the change‑out to minimize downtime while the main power was safely disconnected.
- Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty included for lasting peace of mind on our workmanship.
The result is a safer, more resilient electrical system with clearly labeled circuits and modern protection at the service entrance.
Code, safety, and inspection
As inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020 updates in our region, some homes may require additional protective devices such as AFCI breakers on certain circuits. Where those upgrades are required, our team explains options and can diagnose preexisting wiring conditions (like shared neutrals) that may cause nuisance tripping. For Ed’s project, we focused on bringing the new panel and protective devices into compliance and ensuring a smooth inspection process.
Ongoing protection with our GOLD Home Safety Plan
Ed also enrolled in our Annual Home Safety Plan – GOLD, which starts with a comprehensive whole‑home electrical checkup and includes valuable perks. The inspection covers:
- Panel inspection: voltage readings, bus bar condition, sealed KOs, proper bonding
- Testing of whole‑home surge protection and service disconnects
- Assessment of the main service: meter base, feeders, weatherhead/risers, grounding system, and water intrusion risks
- Site testing of home protection systems: smoke/CO detectors, security and camera systems
- HVAC and major appliance disconnect inspections
- GFCI testing throughout the home
GOLD members also receive extended workmanship coverage on Touchstone Electric’s work, an exclusive discount on today’s project, and $0 dispatch and diagnostic fees for future visits.
