Main Electrical Panel Upgrade and Surge Protection in Princeton, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a comprehensive main service upgrade for Ground Works - Raleigh in Princeton, NC. Led by technician Brad Williams, the project brought the home’s electrical distribution up to current code, expanded capacity to 200 amps, and added robust whole-home surge protection. All work was permitted and inspected, with the job completed on November 11, 2025.

What We Upgraded
- Permit and Inspection: We pulled the permit and coordinated the inspection for a smooth, code-compliant process.
- Main Electrical Panel Replacement (200A, indoor, aluminum bus): The new panel was grounded and bonded, the main lug was replaced, circuits were reconnected, and the panel was clearly labeled for safety and ease of future service. The aluminum bus panel includes a 20-year transferrable warranty.
- Whole-Home Surge Protection: Installed a system providing up to $10,000 of protection for 3 years to help safeguard appliances and electronics from damaging surges.
- Power Management During Outage: Temporary power was made available via generator for limited usage during the panel changeover.
As part of the upgrade, we installed and configured a balanced set of new breakers to match the home’s loads:
- 1 × 80A Standard breaker (Range, heater/furnace, small subpanel, etc.)
- 1 × 50A Standard breaker (Range, heater/furnace, small subpanel, EV charger, etc.)
- 1 × 40A Standard breaker (Dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, EV charger, etc.)
- 2 × 30A Standard breakers, double-pole (Dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, EV charger, etc.)
- 1 × 30A Standard breaker, single-pole (Appliances)
- 1 × 20A Standard breaker, double-pole (Small appliances)
- 13 × 20A Standard breakers (Small appliances and general circuits)
- 3 × 15A Standard breakers (Bathroom lights per 2020 code and standard branch circuits)

Code Notes and What to Expect
As local inspectors implement NEC 2020 requirements, you may be required to upgrade certain breakers to AFCI. In some homes, AFCI breakers can trip immediately due to preexisting conditions (such as shared neutrals). Resolving shared-neutral issues can involve opening fixtures and methodically isolating circuits, which may require additional diagnostic time.
