Main Electrical Panel Upgrade Completed in Scotland Neck, NC
Touchstone Electric completed a main electrical panel upgrade for Ground Works - Outer Banks (JES) in Scotland Neck, NC. This Panels & Service Upgrades project was completed by Joseph Portillo and Gustavo Peralta and included permitting, inspection coordination, panel replacement, updated grounding, new circuit breakers, and whole-home surge protection.
An electrical panel is the central distribution point for a property’s electrical system. Replacing an aging or undersized panel can support safer circuit management, clearer labeling, improved grounding and bonding, and the addition of modern electrical protection devices. For this project, our Raleigh branch team installed a 200-amp indoor main panel with an aluminum bus bar and reconnected the existing service entrance cable and branch circuits.
Electrical Panel Replacement and Code-Focused Updates
The new panel was labeled and grounded and bonded as part of the installation. Proper labeling helps make it easier to identify individual circuits, while grounding and bonding are important components of a properly installed electrical service panel.
Touchstone Electric also installed the following breakers to support the property’s existing electrical needs:
- One 40-amp standard breaker
- Three 30-amp double-pole standard breakers
- Five 20-amp standard breakers
- Six 15-amp standard breakers
New grounding rods were installed and connected to the main electrical service panel using appropriate grounding conductors and clamps. The work was completed with permitting and inspection included, helping ensure the upgraded panel installation was reviewed through the required local process.
Whole-Home Surge Protection for Electrical Equipment
In addition to the panel replacement, our electricians installed a whole-home surge protection system at the main electrical panel. A panel-mounted surge protector is designed to divert excess voltage away from the electrical system during certain power surges, such as those associated with utility fluctuations or electrical equipment cycling on and off.
Whole-home surge protection can help provide an additional layer of protection for connected electrical components, appliances, and hardwired equipment. The installed surge protection system includes a stated $50,000 covered-equipment warranty for 10 years, subject to its terms, conditions, and exclusions. Direct lightning strikes, security systems, and medical equipment are excluded from covered equipment, and claims are secondary to existing insurance coverage.
Work Completed With Planned Power-Outage Support
Because a main panel replacement requires power to be disconnected during portions of the installation, the Touchstone Electric team made a generator available for limited power use while work was underway. An electrical assistant also supported the project to help the installation move efficiently.
The installed aluminum bus bar panel includes a 20-year transferable warranty, and the completed work also included Touchstone Electric’s Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty. As with many electrical panel upgrades, existing wiring conditions can affect whether additional code-related work is needed. In particular, AFCI breaker requirements and pre-existing circuit conditions may require further evaluation if issues such as nuisance tripping are identified.
