Lighting, Ventilation, and GFCI Upgrades in West Jefferson, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Asheville team, operating from our Hendersonville branch, completed a comprehensive lighting and safety upgrade for Re-Bath Charlotte in West Jefferson, NC. On May 28, 2026, technicians Justin Wallace and Frank Fragale delivered a clean, code-conscious installation that modernized lighting, improved bathroom ventilation, and added protection with GFCI and AFCI technology.

Project Overview

This project combined lighting installation, bathroom exhaust ventilation, and electrical safety enhancements to support an ongoing remodel. The scope included new fixtures, device replacements, and a dedicated circuit for a specialty appliance.

  • New lighting: Installed two customer-supplied fixtures and added two recessed can lights for even, efficient illumination.
  • Sconce updates: Added two new wall sconces and removed existing sconces that were no longer needed, with new junction boxes provided for the added fixtures.
  • Bathroom exhaust fan: Removed the old housing, cut drywall as needed, reworked ducting, and connected a customer-supplied fan to the existing power source.
  • Dedicated circuit for electric toilet: Ran new wiring to support a single-purpose circuit for reliable operation.
  • GFCI protection: Installed three new GFCI outlets with covers for shock protection in moisture-prone areas.
  • Panel safety: Installed a 15A GFCI/AFCI combo breaker serving kitchen receptacles to enhance protection against ground faults and arc faults.
  • Selective device changes and removals: Removed an obsolete wall outlet per design and replaced devices as needed to match the upgraded plan.

Materials and Methods

Our electricians used NM-B Romex wiring and careful routing techniques to minimize disruption and preserve finishes throughout the remodel.

  • 12/2 NM-B (approx. 40 ft): For 20-amp circuits and the new dedicated load.
  • 14/2 NM-B (approx. 25 ft): For lighting branch circuits.
  • Fishing wire (approx. 55 ft): To pull conductors through finished areas and tight spaces with minimal drywall impact.
  • Custom junction boxes: Provided for the two added lights to ensure secure, code-compliant terminations.

Note: The customer supplied the bathroom fan. Scope included duct adjustments and connection to existing power; it did not include replacing full duct runs or adding new power circuits for the fan.

Safety, Code, and Performance

Bathrooms and kitchens require special attention to moisture and fault protection. GFCI outlets help reduce shock risk, while the GFCI/AFCI combo breaker adds an extra layer of protection against both ground faults and arc faults.

Important to know: Installing AFCI breakers can reveal preexisting wiring issues (such as shared neutrals). These conditions may cause immediate tripping and can require detailed circuit tracing—sometimes opening light boxes—to locate and correct the issue. Our team is equipped to diagnose and resolve these findings when they occur.

Results for the Home

  • Brighter, cleaner lighting: Balanced illumination from new sconces and recessed cans.
  • Better ventilation: Updated fan helps remove humidity to protect finishes and indoor air quality.
  • Upgraded protection: New GFCI outlets and a GFCI/AFCI combo breaker enhance safety where it’s needed most.
  • Purpose-built power: A dedicated circuit for the electric toilet supports reliable performance.
