200A Electrical Panel Upgrade in Lexington, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team completed a 200-amp electrical panel upgrade for homeowner Logan Kepley in Lexington, NC. Led by technician Christian Cedillos, this project brought the home’s service equipment up to current code with a safer, cleaner layout and modern protection. Date of completion: February 26, 2026.

This job falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades services and was delivered by our Matthews branch serving the Lexington area.

Scope of Work Completed

  • New 200A main breaker panel (indoor, aluminum bus): Panel brought to current electrical code, properly grounded and bonded, main lugs addressed, and all circuits neatly labeled.
  • Reconnection of existing wiring: Service entrance conductors and existing branch circuits were re-terminated in the new panel with clean wire management.
  • Breaker replacement throughout:
    • 6x 15A standard breakers for lighting and general branch circuits
    • 5x 20A standard breakers for kitchen and small-appliance circuits
    • 3x 30A double‑pole breakers for larger loads (e.g., dryer, water heater, A/C)
    • 1x 60A breaker for higher-demand equipment (e.g., range, furnace, subpanel, EV charging)
  • Whole‑home surge protection: A surge protective device was installed to help shield sensitive electronics and appliances from spikes.
  • Grounding system upgrade: Added a two‑rod grounding electrode system with proper bonding for improved fault clearing and lightning protection paths.
  • Service cable adjustments: Installed SEU #2 (3‑wire) service cable as needed between meter base and panelboard for a reliable connection.
  • Permitting and county inspection: All work was permitted and scheduled for the required local inspection.

Power was safely disconnected during the changeout, and the new panel layout provides clearer labeling, improved safety, and future capacity for added circuits or upgrades.

Why Upgrade to a 200A Panel?

  • Capacity for today’s loads: Better support for HVAC, kitchen appliances, EV charging, and additions.
  • Safety and reliability: New breakers and terminations reduce overheating and nuisance trips caused by aging components.
  • Cleaner organization: Labeled circuits and tidy wire management make future service faster and safer.
  • Code compliance: The panel and grounding were updated to align with current standards adopted in Lexington, NC.

Code and Safety Notes for Lexington Homeowners

As inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020 requirements in our area, some circuits may need AFCI protection. When AFCI breakers are added, preexisting wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—can cause immediate tripping and may require additional diagnostics to correct. Our team explains these findings on site and provides repair options if needed.

Local Team, Permits Included
