Level 2 EV Charger Outlet Installation in Charlotte, NC

Our Charlotte branch based in Matthews completed a clean, permitted Level 2 EV charging circuit for homeowner Fred Dalton. On November 18, 2024, technician Danny Bishop installed a NEMA 14-50 outlet and dedicated 40A breaker on the right side of the customer’s garage to support charging for a Nissan Leaf.

Project Overview

This Level 2 EV charger outlet project was designed for dependable daily charging with a tidy, surface‑mounted installation. The scope included permitting, a new panel breaker, conduit, and THHN wiring to deliver a safe, code‑minded 240V circuit right where the customer needed it.

  • Location: Charlotte, NC (right side of garage)
  • Branch: Charlotte team in Matthews
  • Technician: Danny Bishop
  • Completion date: November 18, 2024
  • Primary category: EV Charging
  • Secondary category: Level 2 EV Charger Installation

What We Installed

  • NEMA 14‑50, 4‑wire receptacle: Right‑side garage placement for a Nissan Leaf Level 2 charger.
  • New 40A two‑pole breaker: Dedicated circuit sized for a typical 30–32A continuous EV charging load.
  • 1" PVC conduit (approx. 20 ft): Neatly surface‑mounted with proper fittings, straps, and transitions.
  • #8 AWG THHN copper conductors (approx. 25 ft): Hot/hot/neutral plus equipment grounding conductor pulled through conduit for a durable, serviceable run.
  • Permitting: County electrical permit filed and installation performed to current local standards.

This configuration provides a robust, future‑friendly setup for many common Level 2 EV chargers while keeping wiring protected and easily accessible.

How We Built It

  • Confirmed panel capacity and selected an open position for the 40A breaker.
  • Laid out the right‑side garage mounting location to ensure a convenient cord reach and safe working clearances.
  • Installed and supported 1" PVC conduit with clean, level runs and tight fittings.
  • Pulled #8 THHN conductors and terminated at the new breaker and NEMA 14‑50 receptacle.
  • Labeled the circuit and tested for correct voltage and polarity at the receptacle.

The result is a tidy, dependable 240V circuit that helps the homeowner plug in confidently and charge efficiently at home.

Safety, Permits, and Peace of Mind

Touchstone Electric handled the electrical permit for this project. Jurisdictions can require additional non‑electrical permits (such as historic, environmental/septic, zoning, builder, or separate subcontractor permits). These are not included with the electrical permit. If additional permits are needed, we outline the requirements and can provide pricing to process them upon request.

Using PVC conduit with THHN copper conductors and a dedicated breaker helps ensure a durable installation that supports continuous EV charging loads in a residential garage environment.
