Level 2 EV Charger Installation with Trenching in Chimney Rock, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Asheville team completed a turnkey Level 2 EV charger installation in Chimney Rock, NC on August 25, 2025. Led by technician Christian Cedillos, this project for Duke Energy - Allumia included outdoor trenching, conduit and conductor upgrades, a dedicated breaker, a wood post mount, and a permitted, code-compliant finish.

What we installed
- 25 ft trench at approximately 18–24 inches to route power to the charger location.
- 1-1/2 inch PVC conduit with fittings and LBs for a durable, weather-ready raceway.
- #6 THHN conductors in conduit for the exterior run and 6/3 NM-B for the interior transition as needed.
- 30-amp double-pole breaker dedicated to the Level 2 charging circuit.
- Wood post set in concrete to support the outdoor charger/receptacle location where wall mounting wasn’t available.
- Customer-supplied Level 2 EV charger installed and integrated during a single visit.
- Electrical permit filed and inspections coordinated for a fully compliant installation.
Result: a clean, code-compliant Level 2 charging setup that delivers dependable 240V charging where it’s most convenient on the property.
Trenching, safety, and best practices
Outdoor EV charging often requires a dedicated pathway for power. For this project, trenching allowed us to place conduit at the proper depth, protect conductors, and maintain a clean look at the charging location.
- Utility locate reminder: Call 811 before any digging or trenching. We follow local requirements and coordinate utility locate needs to help ensure a safe install.
- Durable mounting: A concrete-set wood post provides a stable, long-term mounting solution where structures are not nearby.
- Right-sized materials: Using appropriately sized conduit and conductors helps reduce voltage drop and supports reliable charging performance.
Permits, inspections, and compliance
We handled the electrical permit and scheduled inspections so the project met local code requirements. Note: jurisdictions may require additional non-electrical permits (such as zoning, historic preservation, or environmental). If additional permits are needed, we’ll advise on next steps and can assist with processing upon request.
