Project overview in Durham, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed a professional Level 2 EV charger installation for Duke Energy - Allumia in Durham, NC. On June 30, 2026, our licensed electricians, Cody Perry and Brad Williams, installed a dedicated 60-amp circuit to power a customer-supplied Level 2 charger. This project was permitted and inspected, and the installation meets current electrical code and manufacturer requirements. The setup is eligible for the Duke Energy EV rebate, and our team provided the documentation needed to support the rebate application.

What we installed

  • Dedicated 60A breaker: Installed a new 60-amp standard breaker in the service panel to supply a dedicated EV charging circuit.
  • THHN #6 conductors: Pulled approximately 20 feet of THHN #6 copper wiring to handle the higher continuous load of Level 2 charging.
  • 3/4-inch EMT conduit: Surface-mounted electrical metallic tubing (about 20 feet) with appropriate connectors, straps, and LBs for a clean, protected, and code-compliant run.
  • Charger connection: Connected the customer-supplied EV charger per manufacturer specifications, either via a suitable receptacle or hard-wired configuration.
  • Labeling and verification: Clearly labeled the new circuit and verified proper grounding, bonding, torque, and conductor terminations.
  • Testing: Energized and function-tested the charger to confirm correct voltage, polarity, and operation.
  • Permitting and inspection: Secured the required permit and coordinated inspection with the local authority having jurisdiction.

Why a 60-amp Level 2 circuit?

  • Faster charging: A 60A circuit can support EVSE output up to 48A continuous (per typical loading rules), reducing charge time versus lower-amp circuits.
  • Future-ready: Many newer EV chargers and vehicles benefit from higher available amperage, adding flexibility for upgrades.
  • Durable materials: THHN #6 copper in EMT provides robust, protected conductors with a professional finish.
  • Code compliance: Proper overcurrent protection, dedicated circuiting, and secure conduit ensure safe, reliable operation.

Permits, safety, and code compliance

For this installation, our team performed a site assessment, verified panel capacity, pulled a permit, and scheduled the inspection. We ensured grounding and bonding were correct, supported conductors with the right fittings and straps, and followed the charger manufacturer’s instructions for the final connection. The result is a neat, organized installation designed for long-term performance.
