Level 2 EV Charger Installed in a Charlotte Garage
On March 16, 2026, our Charlotte branch team based in Matthews completed a Level 2 EV charging project for Duke Energy - Allumia at a home in Charlotte, NC. Lead technician Danny Bishop installed a dedicated 240V circuit for a plug-in EV charger in the garage, placed conveniently just below the main electrical panel for easy access and a clean, professional finish.
The new charging circuit was built on a 50-amp breaker with 6/3 NM-B wiring, providing the capacity and reliability needed for fast Level 2 charging while meeting current electrical standards and manufacturer recommendations.
What This EV Charging Installation Included
- Dedicated 240V, 50A charging circuit designed specifically for Level 2 EV charging.
- Installation of a two-pole 50A breaker in the existing service panel.
- Neat, protected routing of 6/3 NM-B cable from the panel to the charger location in the garage.
- Set-up of a plug-in EVSE location directly beneath the panel for short cord runs and tidy cable management.
- Clear circuit labeling, function testing, and safety verification of the new EV outlet/circuit.
- Electrical permit filed as part of our standard process for code-compliant work in Charlotte.
- Utility incentive guidance: we applied the Duke Energy EV rebate for the customer as eligible.
From planning and permitting to the final test, our goal was to provide a smooth experience and a charger-ready garage with dependable charging performance.
Panel Capacity and Future Options
During the visit, we evaluated the home’s main electrical panel and discussed available capacity for EV charging and other future loads. To ensure ample space and flexibility going forward, we provided a separate quote for either a main panel upgrade or a subpanel. These options help homeowners add circuits for additional EVs, HVAC equipment, or other high-demand appliances without overcrowding the existing panel.
If you’re unsure whether your panel can support a Level 2 charger, we can perform a quick assessment and lay out clear options so you can choose the best path for your home and budget.
