Level 2 EV Charger Installation in Raleigh, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a professional Level 2 EV charger installation for homeowner Ben Jacobs in Raleigh, NC. On July 2, 2025, our technician, Cody Perry, installed a dedicated 50-amp circuit and set up the customer-supplied charger for faster, dependable home charging.
This project was permitted and completed to current National Electrical Code (NEC) standards and local requirements, providing a safe, code-compliant solution that’s ready for daily EV use.
Scope of Work Completed
- Electrical Permit Pulled: We filed the electrical permit with the local authority to ensure the work met all jurisdictional requirements.
- New 50A Circuit: Installed a 2-pole 50-amp breaker dedicated to the Level 2 charger.
- Circuit Run: Routed approximately 20 feet of 8/3 NM-B cable from the main panel to the charger location.
- Durable Protection: Installed about 10 feet of 3/4-inch liquidtight flexible conduit with listed fittings and supports for clean, protected transitions where required.
- Charger Connection: Completed the final connection to the customer’s Level 2 EV charger, using a receptacle or hardwired method as appropriate for the unit.
- Final Checks: Labeled the new circuit and verified proper operation to confirm the charger was ready for everyday charging.
Why Choose a Dedicated 50A Level 2 Circuit?
A dedicated 50-amp circuit is a common choice for many residential Level 2 EV chargers, supporting typical charging outputs up to 40 amps (charger-dependent). This setup provides faster charging compared to standard 120V outlets and ensures your EV can reliably top up overnight.
- Quicker charge times: Reduce downtime with higher Level 2 charging speeds.
- Dedicated capacity: A separate circuit helps prevent nuisance trips and protects other household loads.
- Future-ready: Flexible for many current and future Level 2 chargers within the circuit rating.
Materials and Methods for a Clean, Code-Compliant Install
We selected materials and routing tailored to the home’s layout and the charger’s location:
- 8/3 NM-B cable: Properly supported and routed for a safe, neat installation to the EV charging location.
- Liquidtight flexible conduit (3/4"): Used to protect conductors in exposed areas and transitions, with secure connectors and mounting.
- Listed components throughout: Breaker, fittings, and enclosures installed to manufacturer specifications and NEC standards.
