Project Overview: Level 2 EV Charger Installation in Morrisville, NC
Touchstone Electric recently completed a Level 2 EV charger setup for a homeowner in Morrisville, NC. Our Raleigh branch technician, Patrick Burke, installed a dedicated 50-amp circuit and breaker to power a customer-supplied Level 2 charger in the garage. The project included new conduit and wiring, plus permitting and inspection coordination, and was completed on May 20, 2024 for Chris Shriver.
This installation provides reliable, code-compliant charging capacity for faster overnight charging and long-term equipment safety—perfect for today’s EVs and the growing needs of Morrisville homeowners.
Scope of Work
- Dedicated 50A breaker: Installed a 50-amp standard breaker to supply the Level 2 EV charging circuit.
- New garage circuit: Ran an independent, properly rated branch circuit to serve the charger without sharing load with other devices.
- Conduit installation: Mounted approximately 25 feet of 3/4" PVC conduit to protect and route the wiring cleanly along the garage pathway.
- THHN conductors: Pulled about 25 feet of THHN #4 conductors within the conduit for durable, code-compliant power delivery.
- Charger connection: Completed appliance installation for the customer-supplied Level 2 charger, providing the required receptacle or hardwiring per equipment specifications.
- Electrical permitting: Filed the electrical permit with the local authority and scheduled the necessary inspection.
Every component was installed to meet current electrical code requirements and manufacturer guidelines, supporting dependable performance and long-term safety.
Why a Dedicated 50-Amp Circuit Matters
Most Level 2 EV chargers are designed for continuous loads that can approach 40 amps. A 50-amp circuit sized and protected correctly helps prevent nuisance tripping, overheating, and voltage drop while delivering the charging speed EV owners expect. With a dedicated run in conduit and appropriately sized conductors, the charger receives stable power without competing with other household loads.
This approach maximizes charging efficiency, protects your EV equipment, and aligns with code best practices for continuous-use appliances.
Code Compliance, Permits, and Inspection
Electrical work for EV charging must be performed to current code and inspected by the local jurisdiction. For this Morrisville project, our Raleigh team secured the electrical permit and scheduled the inspection, ensuring full compliance from start to finish. Homeowners get peace of mind knowing the installation is verified and ready for safe, everyday use.
