Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch helped a Durham, NC homeowner upgrade to reliable home charging and better whole-home protection. On April 30, 2026, our technician Brad Williams completed a Level 2 EV charger installation with a new 50-amp dedicated circuit and added a whole-home surge protection system for extra peace of mind.
Project overview
For Tracy in Durham, we installed a customer-supplied Level 2 EV charger, ran new 6/3 NM-B wiring, and installed a properly sized 50A breaker to deliver safe, code-compliant 240V charging. We also pulled the required electrical permit and mounted a whole-home surge protector at the main panel to help shield sensitive electronics and appliances from damaging power surges.
What we installed in Durham
- Level 2 EV charger setup: Customer-supplied charger installed and configured on a dedicated 240V circuit for faster, dependable at-home charging.
- 50-amp breaker: New breaker dedicated to the EV circuit to support the charger’s load and protect the wiring and equipment.
- 6/3 NM-B wiring: Properly sized copper cable run, secured, and terminated to deliver steady power with appropriate overcurrent protection.
- Whole-home surge protection: A panel-mounted device designed to divert excess voltage to ground before it can reach and harm your home’s electrical system and covered equipment.
- Electrical permit: We handled the electrical permit with the local authority to keep the installation aligned with current electrical codes.
About the surge protection system
This home received a whole-home surge protection device featuring up to $50,000 in covered equipment protection for 10 years when properly connected, as specified by the surge protector manufacturer. It helps defend against voltage spikes from lightning activity in the area, utility grid fluctuations, and large appliances cycling on and off—events that can shorten the lifespan of electronics and HVAC components.
Per manufacturer terms, claims are secondary to the homeowner’s insurance, direct lightning strikes are excluded, and certain devices—such as security systems and medical equipment—are not covered. Coverage applies to typical household equipment like major appliances, wiring, outlets/switches, breakers, and other hardwired devices when protected by the installed SPD.
Why this upgrade matters
- Faster charging: Level 2 power dramatically shortens charge times compared to standard outlets.
- Safety and code compliance: Dedicated 50A circuit, correct wire size, and a professionally installed breaker protect your home and charger.
- Electronics protection: A whole-home SPD helps safeguard appliances and sensitive electronics from damaging surges.
- Long-term value: Reduces wear on devices and supports the growing power needs of modern homes.
Craftsmanship you can count on
All work was completed by Brad Williams and is backed by our SignatureLifetime Craftsmanship Warranty on workmanship. Product warranties, such as the surge protector’s manufacturer coverage, apply separately according to their terms.
Permitting made simpler
We included the required electrical permit for this job. Some projects may also need non-electrical approvals (for example, zoning or historic reviews), which are not included. If additional permits are required, we’ll advise you on next steps and can provide pricing to help process them.
