What We Installed
To ensure dependable, efficient charging and full code compliance, our team built a dedicated 240V circuit and professionally mounted and connected the customer-supplied EV charger. Key components included:
- Dedicated 240V circuit: Designed specifically for the EV charger to prevent nuisance tripping and protect other household loads.
- 25A GFCI two‑pole breaker: Provides overcurrent and ground-fault protection required for EV charging applications.
- 10‑gauge copper conductors: Sized for a charger rated up to 20A continuous, supporting safe, continuous-duty operation.
- EMT surface conduit (3/4"): Approximately 25 feet of EMT with proper fittings for a clean, protected, and professional surface run where exposure warranted.
- THHN conductors in EMT: Durable, code-compliant wiring within conduit for the exposed portions of the route.
- NM‑B 10/3 cable: Approximately 45 feet used where concealed, meeting code requirements for interior runs.
- Charger hookup: Customer-supplied EVSE installed, terminated, and labeled, with all connections torqued to specification.
- Testing and verification: Circuit function, GFCI operation, and charger start-up verified before turnover.
Why a 25A GFCI‑Protected Circuit?
Level 2 EV chargers are treated as continuous loads. For a charger rated up to 20A continuous, code practice is to size the overcurrent device at 125% of the load, which supports the use of a 25A two‑pole breaker with 10‑gauge conductors. This approach helps maintain safe operating temperatures, reduces voltage drop on longer runs, and provides reliable day‑to‑day performance. GFCI protection adds an important safety layer for EV charging equipment.
Permitting, Code Compliance, and Inspection
Our Charlotte team handled the electrical permit and installed the circuit to current local and national electrical codes. We neatly routed EMT where the wiring is exposed, transitioned to NM‑B where concealed, secured all boxes and fittings, and labeled the new circuit at the panel. The installation was completed with a clean finish and prepared for inspection.
Duke Energy EV Charger Rebate Support
This project was eligible for the Duke Energy EV charger rebate. Touchstone Electric provided the documentation needed to support rebate submission, helping customers in Charlotte offset a portion of their EV charging upgrade.
