Project overview: Level 2 EV charger install in Fort Mill, SC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team (Matthews branch) completed a Level 2 EV charger installation for homeowner Joshua Routin in Fort Mill, SC on June 5, 2025. Led by technician Christian Cedillos, we prepared the garage for a customer-supplied Grizzl-E Level 2 charger by adding a dedicated 240V circuit, running new conduit and conductors, optimizing panel space, and enhancing protection with a whole-home surge protector. The project was permitted and performed to current electrical code.
Scope of work
- Set a junction box above the main panel in the garage to streamline conductor routing to the charger location.
- Ran 1" PVC conduit from the panel area through the garage with clean transitions and secure supports.
- Pulled appropriately sized #6 THHN conductors in conduit for the new 240V EV charging circuit.
- Used NM-B 6/3 where appropriate to complete the circuit per code.
- Installed a 40A breaker to supply the Grizzl-E Level 2 charger on a dedicated circuit.
- Relocated two existing circuits to the subpanel to create space in the main panel for the EV circuit.
- Installed a whole-home surge protector at the main electrical panel for added protection of the home’s electrical system and connected equipment.
- Filed the electrical permit with the county and completed final testing and verification.
Materials and installation details
- Conduit: 1" PVC with fittings, connectors, and supports appropriate for a finished garage installation.
- Conductors: #6 THHN pulled in conduit for the 240V EV circuit; NM-B 6/3 applied where suitable.
- Overcurrent protection: 40A standard breaker for the EV circuit, plus standard 20A breakers associated with the circuits relocated to the subpanel.
- Surge protection: Whole-house surge protective device installed at the main panel to help divert excess voltage from lightning, grid fluctuations, or equipment cycling, supporting the longevity of connected appliances and electronics. The device includes a $100,000 / 10-year coverage provision as described by the manufacturer. Claims are secondary to existing insurance and exclude direct lightning strikes; certain equipment (such as security systems and medical equipment) is excluded.
Note: Completing this project required limited sheetrock cuts in the garage. As communicated before work began, Touchstone Electric is not responsible for wall repair or paint touch-ups.
Permits and code compliance
We secured the electrical permit for this installation. Every jurisdiction has different requirements; the permit provided covers only the electrical scope. If additional non-electrical permits (such as historic, environmental/septic, zoning, or builder-related permits) are required by your jurisdiction, those are not included. If such items arise, we’ll advise you on what’s needed and can provide pricing to process any additional non-electrical permits if requested.
