Level 2 EV Charger Installation and Whole‑Home Surge Protection in St Andrews
Touchstone Electric completed a comprehensive Level 2 EV charger installation and surge protection upgrade for Duke Energy - Allumia in St Andrews. The project was handled by our Columbia branch and expertly completed by technician Cash Divver on June 5, 2026. Our team delivered a code-compliant dedicated circuit for faster home charging and added a whole-home surge protector to help safeguard the property’s electrical system and connected appliances.
Project Overview
This job included installing a customer-supplied Level 2 EV charger on a new, dedicated 240V circuit. We installed a 60A breaker, ran appropriately sized conductors, and completed permitting per local requirements. To enhance safety and reliability, we also installed a whole-home surge protective device (SPD) at the main electrical panel. In addition, our team assisted with required Duke Energy permit coordination and provided guidance for the Duke Energy EV rebate process.
Scope of Work Completed
- Customer-supplied Level 2 EV charger installed with a dedicated 240V circuit for dependable, everyday charging.
- 60A breaker added to the main panel to support the charger’s load and future-ready charging needs.
- Approximately 15 ft of #6 SEU wiring routed, with conduit as needed, for a neat, professional finish and code compliance.
- Permit obtained and inspections coordinated to meet local and utility requirements.
- Duke Energy EV rebate support provided, including documentation guidance to help the customer take advantage of available incentives.
- Whole-home surge protector installed at the main service panel to help protect appliances, electronics, and sensitive equipment from voltage spikes.
Why a 60A Circuit for Level 2 Charging?
A 60-amp dedicated circuit provides robust capacity for many Level 2 chargers, helping reduce charge times and support continuous operation. With correctly sized conductors and overcurrent protection, the installation is designed to deliver reliable performance while meeting applicable electrical codes in St Andrews.
Permits, Inspections, and Rebate Help
We handle the details so you don’t have to. For this St Andrews project, Touchstone Electric secured the required permit and coordinated inspection for a smooth, hassle-free installation. Our team also assisted with Duke Energy’s EV rebate steps, helping the customer gather the proper documentation. While utility program requirements can change, we provide up-to-date guidance to help you maximize available incentives.
Safety Upgrade: Whole‑Home Surge Protection
To help protect the home’s electrical system from lightning-related surges, utility fluctuations, and everyday power spikes, we installed a panel-mounted surge protector. An SPD adds a vital layer of protection that can extend the life of appliances, home electronics, and the EV charging equipment by diverting excess voltage safely to ground.
