Project overview
On June 30, 2025, our Charlotte team out of the Matthews branch completed a Level 2 EV charger installation with whole-home surge protection for Duke Energy - Allumia in Charlotte, NC. Lead technician Christian Cedillos handled the installation, permitting, panel work, and final commissioning so the new EV charger is safe, fast, and code-compliant.
What we installed
- Customer-supplied Level 2 EV charger professionally mounted and connected.
- Dedicated 40A, 240V circuit for the EVSE using approximately 20 feet of 8/3 NM-B Romex to ensure proper capacity and future-ready performance.
- 40A standard breaker added for the new EV circuit.
- Two 20A tandem breakers installed to optimize panel space while maintaining safe distribution for small-appliance circuits.
- Whole-home surge protection installed at the main electrical panel to help shield the home’s electrical system and connected devices from damaging voltage spikes.
- Electrical permit secured and work performed to current code requirements for Charlotte/Mecklenburg County.
- Testing and verification of charging output, GFCI/AFCI interactions where applicable, labeling, and homeowner orientation.
Why a dedicated Level 2 circuit matters
A Level 2 charger on a properly sized 40-amp, 240-volt circuit significantly reduces charging time compared to standard household outlets. By running a new dedicated circuit with the correct wire size and protection, we help ensure reliable performance, reduced nuisance tripping, and a safer charging experience for daily use.
Added protection for your home’s electronics
Whole-home surge protection at the panel helps divert excess voltage from lightning, utility fluctuations, and equipment cycling. This added layer of defense supports the longevity of your appliances, HVAC, and sensitive electronics—an ideal complement to any new EV charging installation in Charlotte.
Permit, compliance, and inspection
Touchstone Electric handles the permitting process so your project is completed to local code and ready for inspection. Our team follows best practices for load calculations, conductor sizing, and overcurrent protection to deliver a clean, code-compliant result that you can count on.
Duke Energy EV rebate applied
For this Charlotte installation, a Duke Energy EV rebate was applied to eligible portions of the project, helping reduce out-of-pocket costs. We assist customers with the documentation needed for available local incentives where applicable, so you can make the most of programs in the Charlotte area.
