Level 2 EV Charger Installation and Panel Tune-Up in Charlotte, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, based out of our Matthews branch, completed a comprehensive Level 2 EV charger installation and electrical panel tune-up for homeowner Colin Dyer. Led by technician Danny Bishop and completed on 2024-01-12, this project delivered fast, reliable charging in a detached garage while enhancing whole-home electrical safety and performance.
Project Overview
To support a 50A Level 2 EV charger, we extended a dedicated circuit from the outdoor main panel to the customer’s detached garage in Charlotte. The installation included surface-mounted conduit along the home’s exterior, a short trench to reach the garage, and a clean, accessible interior run to the charging location specified by the customer. We installed the customer-supplied charging unit and performed a thorough panel rejuvenation with breaker updates and the addition of whole-house surge protection for added peace of mind.
What We Did
- 50A Circuit Extension: Designed a dedicated circuit sized for Level 2 charging needs and the run length to support proper performance and minimize voltage drop.
- Exterior Conduit Run: Extended from the outdoor panel using approximately 24 ft of 3/4" PVC conduit, securely fastened below the siding for a tidy, durable finish.
- Professional Trenching: Trench of about 7 ft at an 18–24 inch depth to reach the detached garage. As with any digging, contacting 811 to locate utilities prior to trenching is essential.
- Interior Garage Routing: Extended the circuit along the garage’s interior wall to the exact charging location requested by the homeowner.
- Charger Setup: Installed and tested the customer-supplied Level 2 EV charger for proper operation on the dedicated 50A circuit.
- Panel Rejuvenation: Cleaned and vacuumed the panel, sealed openings, inspected for water intrusion, tested AFCI/GFCI breaker function, tightened terminations, confirmed proper ground/neutral separation (one conductor per lug), applied antioxidant as needed, and verified correct incoming voltage.
- Breaker Updates: Replaced select breakers to improve safety and reliability.
- Whole-House Surge Protection: Installed a surge protective device at the main panel to divert excess voltage to ground during lightning, grid fluctuations, or equipment cycling—helping protect modern appliances and electronics throughout the home.
